Re: no sound card detected even though I can hear CDs...
First check that you are having no problems with your soundcard, go to control panel>system>hardware>device manager and see if there is a yellow exclamtion mark next to the soundcard.. If there is then try updating the drivers for it, or uninstalling it by right clicking it and choose uninstall then reboot the computer, the soundcard will be picked up as new hardware and should be installed again. Before you do this though you need to be sure that you have a pci soundcard actually installed and not an onboard chipset soundcard. If you have an onboard soundcard then it may not be good enough for games to be played. A lot of games require a minimum type of soundcard. Check to see what you have. Go to control panel as explained and write down the model number of your soundcard. Then check the minimum requirements for the game you are trying to play.

Do you have your original Windows install CDs or DVD?. If so, you can try booting from the install media. It should begin as though it will install Windows, but should detect you already have a version of Windows installed, and give you the option to "repair" that version. BE CAREFUL NOT TO USE A RECOVERY CD OR DVD that came with your PC, as these typically return your hard drive to factory state and wipe out its contents. Only use a Windows install CD or DVD, that way the data on your hard drive will stay intact
This means 1 of 2 things. Either your Sound Card is fried, or the Sound driver is corrupted.
1. First, check that your driver is installed.
Click the start menu and right click on "My Computer" and click "Manage". Select "Device Manager" from the list on the left, Scroll down to "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers". Expand that list, if you have any errors (Yellow Triangles, Red X's) there, you will need to reinstall drivers which can be obtained HERE.
2. Install a new Sound Card in your computer. This will be a PCI-type Card. There are cheap replacements which can be found HERE.
STEP 1: Check if the sound card is being detected by clicking on the Start button, then select Run, and type in "devmgmt.msc".
STEP 2: Check the "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" if there are bangs on the devices or if the Sound Card is being detected.
STEP 3: We are trying to figure out if the sound card is being detected or not, because if its detected by your system and there are bangs you need to install the driver for your sound card. Or if its not detected, you might try unplugging the sound card and plugging it back to the computer but if that still doesnt work, you need to replace the sound card.
Thanks! I know it will work. Be Positive! Your good rating will be very much appreciated.
Vista can be tricky with some installations even if the game says it's compatible. The first thing I would try is running the installation with escalated privelege. To do this follow these instructions...
1. When you insert the installation CD, an autorun screen will most likely pop up inviting you to install the game. Cancel this.
2. Go to my computer and right click on the drive that contains the installation CD. Choose 'explore'
3. A file list will appear listing the contents of the CD. Scroll through the list and locate the file that launches the installer. This may be called setup.exe or install.exe or something like that.
4. Right-click on the file and choose "run as administrator".
5. The installer should launch and hopefully the game will install OK.
If this does not work - you can also try updating your graphics card drivers. First - identify what type of graphics card you have. (right click the desktop - click on personalize - click on display settings (I think) - and note the name of the adapter. It will likely be either ATI Radeon or NVIdia GeForce with a number after it. Let me know what it is and I will get you the web address for your update.
