I purchased a new HP Officejet 5740 printer. It worked fine for a while but now will not print at all. What do I need to do.

I'm guessing you don't think it's a hardware fault? (The machine physically broken; as that would warrant a refund, repair, bin)

So if there's nothing wrong with the printer physically, then it's probably a 'driver' (I have no idea of your IT knowledge). HP are very sneaky, in that they make you install all kinds of software you really don't need, and they make it very difficult to uninstall it sometimes.

Firstly check all your cables/wireless settings. Try plugging the printer into a different USB socket. Try printer.
Download the latest drivers for your printer from the HP site.
Uninstall every HP application that relates to your printer.

Then preform the following;

Step one: Clear temp directory
1. Type %temp% in the run or search for programs and files field
2. Highlight all the files in this folder, and then press the delete key to delete. If you get a message that the file is in use you will need to skip this file(s).

Uninstall the software using the scrubber program:

1. Download the full feature software and drivers
http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-5740-e-all-in-one-printer-series/6617253/model/6617254
2. Once the download is finished double click on the file to extract the software.
3. When the installation window opens press the cancel button to stop the installation
4. Type %temp% in the run field
5. Look for, and open the folder starting with 7z (Example: 7zS2356)
6. Right click on the folder, and select Copy
7. Close that window, and all your open windows, and then in the middle of the desktop right click your mouse, and select Paste. This will move the 7z folder to your desktop.
8. Open the 7z folder you just copied to your desktop
9. Open folder Util
10. Open folder CCC
11. Run the L4uninstall.exe
12. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer

Once restarted use the same installation file to reinstall the software and drivers. Restart again, and hopefully you haven't wasted your time

How to setup an all-in-one printer to scan to a computer.

You purchased an all-in-one system and hooked it up as a printer but now you want to be able to scan documents into your computer and save them to disk. How do you do this?

If you already have the unit hooked up to print you probably loaded the software off the disk which came with the unit. In many cases though you do not need to load the software as most units are plug and play. You just plug them in and the software is already in the operating system. The catch is that only the software for printing is available from the operating system.
There are two ways to load the drivers for the scanning process. One is from the supplied disk and the other is from the manufacturers driver download site on the internet. The advantage of downloading from the site is you will get the most up to date drivers and possible prloblems should be solved making for less problems for you. I will describe both options starting with downloading from a CD.

If you did not load the software from the disk yet, open the CD drive on your computer and load the disc which came with the printer.

It should start automatically, but if it does not, click on "My computer" if the icon is on your desktop, or click on start which will open a window containing "My computer".

Clicking on "my computer" will open a new window which should show the various drives (C, D, DVD-CD, etc). You need to click on the icon which shows the driver disc for the printer.

It will more than likely refer to the printer by model number. Once launched the software should be automatic and install all the necessary software drivers to run the printer to include scanning to your computer. Follow the on screen instructions and answer any questions. You may be asked where you want to store it, always choose the "C" drive.

When the software is done loading you may or may not have to reboot your computer. I always recommend rebooting, whether told to or not, to ensure that the software is accessable to the operating system.

Once the computer is rebooted you should see an Icon to launch the printer, if you do not see it, click on start. Next you will see "all programs" at the bottom of the window. Click or mouse over this. A new window will open which will show all the software on the computer. All the programs will be listed alphabetically. Find "HP 1350" and mouse over it. Find the main program (usually the name of the printer) and "RIGHT CLICK" on it.

This opens a window which gives you selections, one of which is, "create a desktop icon". Click on that and close all windows. You now should have an icon on the desktop which will link you to the software.

Click on the icon. The software will boot up and you should see a selection for "scan a document to the computer" or something similar.

Click on that choice and the rest should be automatic. Follow the on-screen instructions and you should be able to scan and save to disk anything you would like.

To install the driver from the internet log on and Google the manufacturers website. There should be a tab for support. Open this and click on driver/software downloads or perhaps just downloads. This should open another window where you enter your model number and possibly other information.

Once you are at the download page choose the driver for your operating system (XP, Vista, 7) and the number of bits (32 or 64). Sometimes this is automatic. Proceed with the download by hitting the download button. This will open a window asking if you want to run or save the program. Run the program. It should be automatic from this point but if not just follow the instructions.

When the download completes you may have to reboot. If not reboot anyway. You should see a message that new programs were installed. Now you are at the same point as above when loading from disk after the reboot and can follow the instructions above to finish the process.

Thanks for using FixYa and the great rating.

I tryed to download my printer software and now my computer keeps shutting down evertime i try to open up a program

Boot into safe mode (Keep hitting F8 until the boot option comes up)
In safe mode go to Start, Programs, Accessories System tools
Select System Restore
Pick a date before you loaded the printer driver software
The computer should be fine now but without the printer driver
Find a printer driver from the manufacturer that matches your model and operating system
Install the printer driver
Hope this helps

No communication between printer and laptop

Power down the printer and disconnect the cord connecting printer and laptop. If the printer is wireless, unpair the bluetooth link between printer and laptop. Remove printer and all drivers for printer. Go to manufacturer website for printer and download latest drivers. Restart computer. During the restart of the computer, power up printer. Once the computer is back and loaded to the desktop, reconnect printer. Make sure once the New Hardware Wizard pops up, you locate where you downloaded the drivers and complete the install.

Getting device error when trying to connect puter & printer

When you state removed the printer, are you stating you physically unplugged the USB cable, from the printer to the computer, and Uninstalled the printer software? If you have an uninstall option for your printer software, it's best to use it. Add/Remove Programs is the second place you go. (IF no uninstall option is present)
Start>Hover on All Programs>printer software>Uninstall.

Try this:
The printer, Must be physically disconnected from the computer, and the printer should be turned off, and unplugged from power. I'll explain why at the end of this.

Go to Start>Hover your mouse cursor on All Programs>Printer software>Look in the list for uninstall.
Click on uninstall. Follow any instructions. If it asks you are you sure, Yes is the answer. If it asks you if you want to delete any personal settings, or saved settings, Yes you do.
If it asks you if you want to restart your computer, NO you don't.

Shut the computer down normally. (Start>Turn Off Computer>Shut Down)
Computer off, unplug it from the surge protector. No power to the computer.
Press the Power On button in, and hold it in. Hold it in for a count of Five seconds. (And I mean Five seconds. Count, 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1005)
Let go of the Power On button.
Do this procedure two more times.

What you are doing, is clearing any CMOS error codes.

Plug the computer back into power. Wait one minute. Turn the computer on. Let Windows fully load up.
Install the printer software CD once more into your optical drive.
Load the printer software.
If it asks you if you wish to restart your computer, Yes you do. If it doesn't ask you, restart your computer anyway.
Once Windows has fully loaded again, and all your programs in the Start menu are finished, plug the printer back into the surge protector. Plug the USB cable back into the computer. Press the Power On button of the printer, and turn it on.

I'm not trying to insult your intelligence in any way, nor your computer prowess. What I believe may have happened here, is that the printer was on, and the USB cable was plugged into the computer, when you went to uninstall and re-install the printer software.

I could be all wrong about this.

When a device is plugged into a computer, Windows recognizes that a new device has been installed.
Windows rushes around, and hurries to find drivers that are compatible with the device. If no drivers are present, Windows matches up it's Generic drivers to that device.

Then THE actual drivers are installed.
Driver conflict results.
Windows: "Which drivers do I use? These or THESE?"

Also, if the uninstall option of a software program is not used First, there could be fragmented files of that uninstalled program, floating around in the registry of Windows.
This is why it's best to use an uninstall option for a program, and then if one is not present, use Add/Remove programs.
Would appreciate some feedback on this. Even if it's an "You're all wet"

Computer to Printer Communication problem

Uninstall the printer software, then uninstall the printer itself. then reinstall the software drivers first , then the software.
Remember most USB printers need the drivers and software installed BEFORE you connect them to the USB port on the computer.
You also might look in the device manager for any yellow ! or ? in the USB section. This would indicate a USB driver issue. Post again if you need more help...

Printer installation?

You will have to reload your printer. Plug the printer to your computer and reboot. The Plu and Play should recognize it. Then the Ad Hardware Wizard will pop up. Load the CD that came with the printer and the Wizard will allow you to load and configure the printer driver. Once the drivers are loaded you can print a test page. If it is a USB printer then load the drivers first, then plug your printer in and reboot.

Hi gig14789,
Never do a re-install unless you run the un-install software or remove the program from within add/remove programs in control panel. You're software is all messed up now. Lets try this.
Turn off you're printer (press the on/off button). Click the start button & slide up to & click on control panel. Once opened. Double left click add/remove icon & it will open. Find Lexmark & un-install the software by clicking on remove. Un-install/remove anything having t do with the Lexmark printer. When finished close all opened windows. Restart you're system. When windows has finished loading I need you to creat a folder on you're desktop. Name it (Lexmark Z705). Click on the link below.

http://search.lexmark.com/printer/US/en/15L0000
Save this link above to you're favorites. (You may need to come here again).

Scroll down the page till you see, Lexmark Z705 - Drivers and Downloads. Click on you're operating system.
Click download now. Choose to save the file. Save the file into the folder you created (Lexmark Z705). Once down loaded open the (Lexmark Z705) folder. Double left click the .exe file.
Follow the instruction & on screen prompts. The software will tell you when to power on you're printer.
If this fails to install correctly please post back in this windows & list any error messages you might receive. List you're operating system too.

Good Luck!

I wouldn't worry about turning the printer on and connecting it, that's just to avoid picking up generic drivers before you install the ones from the disk.

It's possible your installation CD is faulty. Follow these steps:

1) Download the latest drivers from the address below and install them.

http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/public/eu/gb/en/model_top/monolaserpri/hl2170w_all.html?reg=eu&c=gb&lang=en&prod=hl2170w_all

2) Connect your printer with pc off and turn both the pc and printer on. Windows should automatically install the drivers. If not then open device manager and install from there.

I hope this helps,

erch.
