Question about Alesis M1-Active MkII Main / Stereo Speaker

Alesis M1 MKII bass ports

Hi,
I have recently bought the M1's MKII (new) and installed them in my small studio. I've read in the manual that if your speakers are positioned next to a wall and/or a corner you need to plug the ports. I've put a piece of cloth in each port, which made the air sound through the ports go away. But when I put the volume of the speakers on 7 the bass will already distort. I don't think this is normal, because when I remove the cloth from the ports, I can put the volume louder without distorting the bass but then there is a very annoying  air sound hearable. Is there a solution for this problem or am I just asking way too much from my speakers? Should I plug the ports or leave them open? And with which material do I need to plug it? Thx in advance, Frederik.

thx for yr fast response, the speakers are placed in corners but ofcourse with the front panel away from the wall. Is it normal that there is so much air noise through the ports?

If desiring loud bass, keep port open. It is designed to be that way. If subs are in a corner, face the wall to change the wavelength and port noise wont be as evident.

there are complicated formulas you can use to figure out port noise. It's a give and take. The manufacturer is willing in this case to sacrifice a little port noise for a lower tuning frequency yet keeping the enclosure minimal. I believe the ratio is 3:1 port length to port diameter. If you want to slow down the air, put a breatheable material like grille cloth or fiberglass insulation. It will change the tuned frequency of the enclosure however.

Ported enclosures handle more power more efficiently... so short of re-tuning the enclosure with a larger port, you are stuck with the noise.

Hi one of my alesis m1 520 speakers has a fault . it powers up ok but theres hardly any sound coming out . you can hear it but its very low

Try reversing cables between speakers just to make sure it's not cable or source. If it is a bad soaker, you'll need to contact Alesis for a local service center near you. Check w/ Guitar Center also, they have access to service.

Sure they don't have power? Light breaks all the time on those things. If no power still, open it up and find out if there are any loose connections from the power leads. Bad power cable?

Woofer doesn't work

sounds like the voice coil could be open or damaged. the woofer can be reconed. reconing replaces all the moving parts in the speaker frame returning to new condition in most cases.

Alesis M1 Active Mk2 Speaker won't Power Up

Hi, This is usually the Capacitor C8 on the powerboard it usually bulges and pops, its becuase its right next to a resistor which gets very hot and sometimes puts the capacitor into meltdown, yours might have gone past that stage but this is worth a look; http://www.neufeld.newton.ks.us/electronics/?p=232

Hope this helps

Cheers

Alesis 620 m1 active studio monitors sound cutting out

It could be a power problem, unless you have blown the driver ?, carefully pull out the power supply board, and look to see if anything looks melted, burned, or capacitors popped etc. Be carefull though as I do not want to be responsible if you get an electric shock, etc. preferably look and dont touch, just use common sense ;)
