CPU will not start up

We have everything plugged in, but the DELL button will not turn amber to green and begin the startup process. There is no activity from the hard drive light or the fans.

There is no power on the keyboard and when I hit the startup button, nothing happens. No lights or fans, only and dim amber light.

  • robkinney1 Dec 23, 2008

I am thinking it may be the powersupply because the fan doesn't even turn on.

if the computer sits and the button is amber that usually means that the computer is in sleep mode and a keystroke or mouse click will wake the computer up. Try to turn the computer all the way off. (usually unplug or switch off the power supply) then try to boot the computer again and tell us what happens

Also make sure the CPU is installed all the way. There have been a couple people with the same problem so it might not be a bad idea to contact dell and see if they had a bad batch of computers go out.

also another thought is to check and make sure you are getting adequate power from the outlet. It wouldn't be fun to go through all this and find out you just need to replace an outlet.

Hi there
Do you get a post screen at all?
If not chances are that there is a problem with the power suppy, check that all the connections are well seated on the motherboard (inside the case), also check that all the connections and leads are well seated and that the memory is seated well too

regards

sorry you misunderstood me, you have to take a look inside the computer case itself by removing the side panels

    Hi again
I have work with many dells, they tend to use their own power supplies and they do fail occasionally. 90% of the motherboards are not affected by the failure and you will probably just have to replace that and the computer should start up again

When i turn on my Dell Inspiron 2400 Desktop Computer why won`t it start.

Is the computer plugged in to a known good power source with a known good power cord? Also, make sure the power is fully seated on both ends. When you press the power button are you getting any indicator lights? The power button itself has an LED that will be either solid green, blinking green, solid amber, blinking amber, or off. Do you hear any beeps?

I have a Dell Dimension E521. When I cut the power on everything comes on including the monitor, but the monitor will stay black. It does say something about power save hit any button but the screen

A solid green light means the computer is operating normally.

A solid yellow light indicates the power supply is operating normally but the computer is not processing data.

This could mean there is a problem with the CPu or another component on the motherboard.

((A blinking yellow light indicates the power supply is receiving power from the wall, but not functioning properly.
This generally means the power supply itself is bad and should be tested or replaced.))

A blinking green light means the computer is in standby mode.

You should consider visiting Dell Support and downloading the manual for your

your Dell computer. So use the LED power light codes if your Dell computer has them.

hope this helps

Push power button and the power light turns amber and lights up then shuts off. the light in back of the computer is light green and it starts to turn on then dies

The fact that ity is trying to start and shuts off after ..it seams that it is the CPU fan to blame ...If the fan fails to start the CPU will turn the computer down instantly due to the temperature limit ..(in 1 or 2 sec ) ..
so ...open it up ..and see if the fan is spinning ...on start ..and if it is not ...check the connection with the board or replace it ..
(by the way ..this may also be a CPU failure ..and need another one ) ..

My dell xps 400 was shutting off and all i was getting was a solid amber light in front. I was able to hold it in for a bit and then press it and turn it back on for about 2 weeks now. It finally shut off...

You more likely had a temperature issue with the CPU.
Had the CPU fan started to sound like an airplane warming up?
If so, you may have finally burned out the CPU.

Yes it's possible that it was reporting a problem with the power supply, but the only way to know for sure is to replace it.

In the meantime, eliminate everything else.
Disconnect power from EVERYTHING except the motherboard.
If it powers up, then it's possible that either your motherboard is failing (and now works under the decreased load), or one of the things you unplugged has failed.

If the unit springs to life, turn it off, and start reconnecting things.
If it fails constantly whenever 1 specific thing is plugged in, that thing or the motherboard chip that controls it is the problem.

I have a dell dimension 2400. My starts up fine

Most likely a motherboard issue.

Also ensure the CPU Heatsink is firmly attached. If the heatsink is loose, replace the plastic heatsink retainer

If it is secure, then the motherboard is the most likely failure point

Take a 2-CPU Precision 670 down to 1-CPU

You probably removed the "primary" CPU,
and the computer cannot operate only with the "secondary" CPU installed.

Move the CPU from the "secondary" slot to the "primary" slot.
