If this happens only when connecting the receiver, chech the receiver cable. If the cable is fine, receiver connector at the back of receiver is faulty.

Protect mode will kick in whenever a fault is detected.

You get the unit not powering up, and sometimes you hear a clicking noise, that is the protection switch that keeps shutting down the unit.

Causes that can start protect mode are:

Electrostatic harges on internal circuits.
Leave the unit unplugged for power for one hour or so, this will allow discharge.

Bad speaker wiring.
Check speaker wiring, try unplugging and plugging back, or start after removing one speaker at the time.

Internal fault.
Internal fault is the natural cause for protect mode. If all the above did not work, then the problem is a blown component or an internal fault. In this case the unit must be taken apart , tested and repaired by an experienced person.
If the unit is less than one year old, or if you want to get service, call Sony at the phone number listed on the product documentation.

Regards.

The Amplifier was failing and that's why you were getting the crackling noise.

Most receivers have an Auto Protect that shuts the system down and goes into Protect mode at the first signs of failure or overheating, usually indication by 'Protect' on the display.

I'm presuming from your post that you never got any indication that the unit was shutting down to protect itself and has just failed, so I'm presuming that this facility isn't fitted on this model.

Depending on you Technical ability it could be an easy repair (replacing the complete PCB or some PCB components). Your only other solution is a visit to a service engineer.

The signal select is set to analog but it still turns off when the volume is slightly turned up, can you tell me why?

Sounds like the receiver is defaulting to "protect mode", this indicates that there is an electrical short present in the system, I have found that speakers or speaker wires tend to be the cause often.
Disconnect all speaker wires at the back of the receiver, turn receiver on and raise the volume control and see if the receiver still shuts down, if the receiver doesn't shut off, then one of the speakers or speaker wires are bad, reconnect one speaker at a time, raise volume and see if the speaker you connected causes the receiver to shut down, if not continue connecting the speakers one at a time, testing to see if the receiver shuts down after each speaker connected, when the receiver faults to "protect mode" again after you have connected a speaker then you know that the last speaker you connected is the "blown" or shorted speasker or wire.If the receiver still shuts off after disconnecting all speaker wires, then either one of your sources has a problem(DVD,CDplayer, cass deck, etc.) or the receiver has an internal short that will have to be repaired by a servicer.

Good Luck !

My jvc hx-d7 radio is turned on in 2 seconds it shuts down to protect mode how do i take protect off ?

You can't. The main amplifier module will probably have a channel blown. The unit is detecting this and tripping into protect mode to stop further damage occurring. Needs to go to a repair place. sorry. ps If you get sound briefly before it trips off then it may just be a speaker wire shorting out! worth checking

I just hooked up my old Onkyo TX-8511 receiver to my bose speakers, which is also hooked up to a subwolfer. When I turn the volume up the system goes into protect mode. Any solutions.

Just check your speaker cabling again. Make sure that all of them are seated properly, none is touching each other or the body of receiver. Rewire if necessary..
Are you using banana plugs for connecting speaker or just directly. Some times even a little tiny wire touching the receiver could trigger the protect mode. Be careful, since protect mode is sometimes not fast enough and it could blown a few trasistors in the power circuit.

Otherwise, do your bose speakers play out load on other systems?

protection mode activated to protect from serious damage and please follow me.1-shut down your system2-make volume in low position3-remove all your connected speaker4-switch your system on and watch if it does not go to protect mode insert your speaker one by one until you find the bad one and change it and start with cable change first and then speaker itself-if it goes to protect mode you must call service center.

HU Shuts Down - "Protect" Blinking

if it is only doing it over 30 then you need to turn down the bass level on the deck and make up for it with the subs sounds like its putting out too much juice. also if your car has a factory amp for your door speakers ect make sure that your factory speakers are the same ohms as the cd player which is 4ohm ,most fancier car speakers are 2 ohm. if that is the case the amp on the cd player is going in to protect mode to prevent frying your factory amp if you have one. check all your wiring from the cd player to the car and make sure it is all properly hooked up and there are no crosed wires. or wire hooked up incorrectly. also make sure the amp wiring kit is big enough gauge for the amp. make sure its not the amp that runs your subs that is cutting off the HU.
