My four year old RCA just turned on all by itself and began changing channels and increasing in volume. It says it is searching, but is is hooked up to cable. I left it unplugged for some hours, now it just turns on and off every half-second. Any idea what the problem may be?

We have a 27 inch Norcent TV that was turning off by itself about every hour or so and more recently it turned off every minute. Now the TV has absolutely no power to it at all. It just died. The TV is only 4 years old. Has anyone been experiencing this problem?

i have a toshiba 32 inch television and after 3weeks it started powering off on its own after half and hour. what can i do to solve this

Comment by ntur, posted on Aug 26, 2008

my TV did the same thing and also would have Hiccups, tv would blank for a 1/2 second but resume. Finally it would not come back on. I figured it died. Then I hooked up another TV. It Hiccupped. Could it be the cable box? The box was pretty warm. I have now hooked up another box. If it happens again I will check my electrical plug which I have been using for 20 years..If it is the cable box then it ruined my big TV

the cold solder points do not explain why the tv comes back on after it goes off.

Brief power outages may cause the TV to turn off on its own. If you are using a surge protector, try connecting the set directly to the wall outlet. If this does not correct the problem, you may need to have your TV serviced.

Sometimes when the tv is old welds stop conducing... so you hit the tv and it works... you should check for some bad (usually white) weldings and solder again.

My TV keep't turning off on its own, very frustrating so I had it checked out and it turned out to be broken joints in the soldering that lead to the power supply.

Hope this helps.

When it shuts off. Try doing what's called a self-diagnostic test.
As soon as the television shuts try these steps.

Pressing on the front panel's 'INPUT' and 'MENU' buttons at the same time, and holding for 5 seconds,
activates the Self Diagnostic Code Mode. The LED flashes denoting a two digit Error Code, or indicating no problem
has occured since the last Initalization.

Please do Note: The front panel buttons must be used, NOT those on the Remote Control.

The number of flashes indicates the value of the MSD (tens digit) of the Error Code.
The flashing then pauses for approximately 1/2 second.
The LED then flashes indicating the value of the LSD (ones digit) of the Error Code.
The Error Code is repeated a total of 5 times.
Example: If the Error Code is ?24?, the LED will flash two times, pause, and then flash four
times.

The Error Code designations indicating a malfunction, or no malfunction, are listed below:
Self Diagnosic Code Description
1 - 2 = no error detected
2 - 1 = X-ray protect (high voltage or beam current)
2 - 2 = Short protect (short protect monitors low voltage supplies)
2 - 3 = Deflection protect (this could be loss of vertical or horizontal deflection)
2 - 4 = Vertical protect (usually loss of vertical from the source).

Good luck! ...Lates...

I have a Magnavox Model # MS3252S431, the picture and color seem fine as well as the audio. However, when I turn it on- usually 2-3 min later it wll either A) Picture goes out, clicks back on, then couple seconds later pic goes out, clicks back on, and usually by the 3 time it clicks off it stays off but my tv power light is still on. or B) It shuts off and stays off- w/ the power light still on. It seems once i turn it off and back on it's fine again though I may have to do this every 20 min or so, then afer a good warm up it doesn't seem to happen?- Or not that I'm aware of? Please help-any recommendations would be helpful.

I have the same problem too. I'm not sure if it is a TV issue, though, because a couple of months ago, my desktop PC was doing the same thing. I think it may be a power quality issue (noisy voltage supply or something). It seems as if some sort of internal protection kicks in. I have contacted the power company and the apartment managers, but they don't have the required equipment to check for this. Any suggestions?

Same problem on a 27Inch Samsung CRT seems to be heat related, when it turns off I can turn it back on and for a split second i hear sound then turns off again, if I let it cool down I can turn it back on and sometimes it stays on for hours other times for only a few minutes.

My tv turns off by itself every 2 seconds. After a long time of turning it back on it might stay on for a couple of hours. I read from "take"'s answer to check the cold solder points...What are these? Where can I find them? Thank you!

My TV turns off by itself. How do you correct it?

Comment by Metz, posted on Jan 06, 2008

I have a GE 32GT720 32" TV chasis #CTC203CF3 with a manufacture date of 1999 in Juarez Mexico. The TV does turn itself off and back on and switching between the cable and VCR setting on my TV. It was doing this every 15 minutes or so. I would unplug the TV and let it sit for a while. When plugging back in it was good for a while then back doing the same thing. I left it unplugged for about 3 days. I then tried again and the same thing. I then took the back off the set and put the set on a table outside the TV bookcase. It ran fine for 5 hours, then back to turning off and on by itself every couple of seconds. My personal opinion is that the problem may be heat related. Perhaps there are broken solder joints on the board that have occured over time with the flexing of the board due to heating and cooling over time. Am I right? I would like a solid answer and solution to this issue if possible. I don't know about the timer circuit idea as this TV does not seem to have a built in timer of any type. Perhaps I don't understand the solution offered...more ellaboration would be nice.
Thanks.
Greg.

Comment by Guest, posted on Dec 11, 2007

The problem is in the timer circut which turns the tv off. This is caused by a defective sleep mode which is defective. Solution is disable the timer circuit completly by by-passing it internally. In other words cut it out and jump across the timer.
