The ThinkPad T40 is notoriously fickle. Have you tried disabling Local Boot under System Config (ctrl-s) at boot? The CD drive won't be recognized until full bootting has occurred, so if it comes to reinstalling/reformatting, you will have to have an external USB floppy drive and boot disks.

What system were you running, and what type of drive-bay inserts do you own?

    Hi,

    This unit powers up correct?

What happend just before you got this error?

Normally with a error like this when you bootup you will see somthing like: [19135224.412000] end_request: I/O error, dev sdi, sector 61507808

If you can would you please let me know what the error is so i can assist you further?

    Thank you

Your hard drive may damaged or windows is corupted, try reinstalling windows if working then good or replace a new hard drive, and reinstall windows there.

My IBM T40 boots to a black screen with the "z"(light at top to right of power.

Try these steps:

1. Remove battery and unplug AC adapter
2. Press power on button for 30 seconds or so (one min is also too)
3. Attach battery and plug into wall
4. Power "ON" as normal

If you are still getting the "Z" and a black screen then I would have the video card or hard drive looked at and replaced. Start with the video card and then look at the hard drive

My ibm thinkpad t40 starts up but comes up with the message "initilazing intel(R) boot agent version 4.1.07 PXE 2.1 build 083 (wfm 2.0), rpl v2,74, what does this mean and how do i get windows 2 start

It means it's initializing its boot agent - most IBM have this feature. Press F1 on start up to go into the bios and then use the settings for start or boot up options to turn it off. If you simply wait - it will go away and windows will start normally anyhow when it is finished.

Sounds like a non-IBM network card is installed. Remove the card and reboot your laptop.

IBM ThinkPad T40 2373 PC Notebook error 1802: unauthorized netword card isplugged in my laptop cannot boot because of this probs

This is ussually caused by an unsupported WiFi card being installed. You can correct this problem by using a quick BIOS hack... (If you are getting the 1802 error)

Go to this site for the fix: http://www.command-tab.com/2006/02/26/thinkpad-1802-error-fix/

How to fix Error 0189

This worked for me on a R40 with the 0189 issue.

When the message pops up, hit escape to continue.

1. Download the IBM Hardware Maintenance Disk and create a floppy. The filename for version 1.75 is i7tm23us.exe. I found it at ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/i7tm23us.exe

2. If you do not have a floppy drive on your laptop, then use nero to create a bootable CD from the files and boot sector of the floppy disk.

3. Boot your laptop from the CD, then choose the Assign UUID option.

This should do the trick for you.

T40 Monitor Display

I assume you are running window XP or vista?
Go to
Start>Control Panel and look for Power Saver, or Screensaver options. There will be settings there for determining how long, if at all, your display will take to turn off.
