Question about DVD & Blu-Ray Players

Hooking up a dvd player

I have a Sylvania TV and am trying to hook up an Oritron dvd player. Both are several years old and the remotes that I have are - one for the dvd player and a remote for the tv as provided by Direct TV.

We have hooked up the yellow wire to video on both the dvd player and the tv as well as the audio white and yellow.

We have switched the Direct TV remote to tv and turned either channel 3 or 4 and have attempted to play a dvd - nothing happens.

My husband and I are both extremely frustrated and need some clear concise instructions on what to do. We are both sure that we are missing something extremely simple but cannot figure it out.

Please help before we throw everything out the window (ha! ha!)

Thank you.

Sue

There is no tv/av button on the remote.

I'm still needing assistance - can someone please help?

    Thank you.

The remote from the DirectTV has an AV1 and AV2 position at the top. I've switched the switch to one then the other and nothing happens.

    Thanks.

10-4 on the yellow, red and white cables. We have ensured they are plugged in correctly.

When we change the channel to 3 or 4 with the Direct TV remote-still nothing happens.

Sylvania TV set to Video 1 or Video or Video in or Aux not Ch3 or 4 - How do I do this?

    Thanks,

    Sue

O.K. - I know I'm sounding stupid - but I want to make sure I have the steps accurate.

I plug in the dvd player to the proper slots for the yellow, white and red plugs - then with the Direct TV remote still in DirectTV mode, I hit the menu button on the front of the tv to change to AV mode - then insert a dvd in the player and it should work?

If that is correct, once I hit the menu button, what do I then click on to change the mode? Is this done with the remote?

    Thank you.

    Sue

    If that is correct -

Thank you for the Sylvania Manual - the only problem is, the manual is for a TV/DVD unit. I'm trying to hook up a separate dvd player to my tv.

Back to my last question - if my procedures were in the right order, what do I do to change the tv to AV mode? I know it was indicated I hit the menu button on the front of the tv - then what? And this is with the tv in Diect tv mode - correct?

    Thank you.

  • Sue Edwards Dec 23, 2008

tborn6 - now I'm more confused then ever. Please take me back to basics so I can understand the entire sequence from start to finish.

Sorry to be such a bother - but I'm not electronically inclined and neither is my husband - so I need step by step instructions in easy to understand format for us to follow.

    Thank you.

    Sue

  • Sue Edwards Dec 23, 2008

Please, someone read the thread and my last comment about needing step by step instructions. I would appreciate it.

    Thank you.

    Sue

  • Sue Edwards Dec 23, 2008

The remote doesn't have anything like that.

  • Sue Edwards Dec 23, 2008

I do not have the remote for the Sylvania TV any longer - do I need to get a universal remote and program it for the tv?

Is there no way to get this set up easily? We've been working on this for two days and I've spent half a day working on this thread and still have been unable to get a clear concise step by step response.

    Thank you.

Try the AV1 or AV2 settings on the TV. See if you get the DVD welcome screen using one of these settings. Hope this helps.

With the originalremote, if you cannot access tv setting menu, and have no input selection, the replacement remote is of no use.

Try pressing the tv/vcr button on your remote sometimes it will be labeled either input tv/vcr or a/v. Press that or see if there is a button labeled with one of those on the front of the tv.

In most old TV sets and DVDs you just have to load the disc and press the "Play" button to put the device into DVD mode. Not sure if it works for your but its definitely worth a try. Please rate it if it worked.
Thanks for using Fixya.

If the above connections have been confirmed and pressing on the Direct TV remote AV1 or AV2 does not change the TV from a channel to AV mode, then the remote does not activate fully some of the TV's functions including shifting from regular channels to AV mode. Might you pls check if on the control panel of the TV, there are manual controls to perform switching to Video 1, AV1 or Video mode?

    copy you lima charlie.

    May I further suggest:

    • turn on/power up only the DVD player and the TV;

    • before anything else, play a known good DVD disc on the player, even if you could not yet see/hear it yet;

    • press the the AV button or Source or Video on the Sylvanias' front control panel not the MENU button and not on the Direct TV remote.

    • thereafter you can try figuring which of the Direct TV buttons will activate/deactivate the Sylvanias' AV mode.
    TNX.

You have to change the INPUT on the TV.
Usually it is AUX or Video/TV button on remote. Some older TVs you actually go one station BEFORE #2 and it is the INPUT. Look on the remote for TV/DVD button or similar.

Make sure your TV is "tuned" to the proper input. To change the input, change the TVs channel below 02, find the "input" dialoge on the tv's menu, or press the "input" or "video" button on the TV or Remote.

Repairing a 20 year old VCR (By chance a BetaMax?) is not worth your time. Replace it with a $60 DVD/VHS combo unit.

I found a website for the remote you need. I need one too. Go to remotes.com and put your model number of DAV 3102 in the space. It will show you the original remote and a replacemet you can use. Kind of expensive but worth it to me.

Help!!Hook-Up DVDvideo to TV

There are two options. If you already have a VCR, run the RCA cables(red, white, yellow; one audio OK) into the inputs at the back of the VCR and then the single "plug for cable" from the VCR out to the TV's input. You can also buy a device at any electronic store, and even at Big Lots, which does the same, but without the VCR, just the inputs and outputs.
