You're bios is version 1.0 according to the manufacture website for P4CM800M7. You're okay.

See this link for drivers, bios, and manual. Probably a good idea to download the manual if you don't have it. Good luck.

Yes, the motherboard has failed : the BIOS was corrupted. All you can do is to remove the battery for 1 hour than try again. If that doesn't fixes it then the board is dead, replace it.

Hi,

Your thoughts are breaking up as you are typing.

You stated;
1) I have a Dell Latitude D420 and a Latitude D620.
The D420 is small, that's what I like about it.

I want to make my D420 faster, is there a possible Processor upgrade?
I'm not sure about the specifications of the motherboard, so I do not know if this is possible.

I know I can get an SSD Harddrive,............the rest is illegible to me.

A) The D420 keeps going slow.

Question: After what?
After you installed an SSD harddrive? After you flashed the BIOS?

B) Was fast when I flashed it.

Question: Flashed the BIOS?
Why?
Why do people always rush to try to upgrade their BIOS program with a flash, when they do not know if it will help, or not?
One mistake and you have a dead laptop. Use it for a paperweight.

When you upgrade the BIOS you have the option to save the original, so you can go back to it in case there is trouble.
Did you?

While I wait.
To upgrade to a better Processor you need to know;

1) What Processor socket is on the motherboard

2) What is the motherboard chipset, and specifically, what is the Northbridge chip of the motherboard chipset.

To explain;

The motherboard chipset is the Northbridge chip, and the Southbridge chip.

(For the Dell Latitude D420 motherboard. This does not apply to motherboards that support the Intel Core i3, i5, i7, or i9 processors)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Motherboard_diagram.svg

{Note*
CPU = Central Processing Unit. Another term is Microprocessor, or simply Processor for short. Does Not mean Personal Computer}

Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_Circuit

The Northbridge chip is so aptly name because for one, it sits on the motherboard to the North, or top of the motherboard. Generally right under the Processor socket.

The Northbridge chip handle the Processor, Ram Memory, and High speed graphics.

{High speed graphics being AGP, or PCI Express. Not a graphics card installed into a PCI slot, nor Integrated Graphics. {Integrated Graphics, OnBoard graphics, same/same}

The motherboard chipset is an Intel 945GMS,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets#Core.2FCore_2_Mobile_Chipsets

(Part number printed on the Northbridge chip is Intel 82945GMS. Part number on the Southbridge chip is Intel 82801GBM)

The Northbridge chip supports Processors with up to a 667Megahertz Front Side Bus. (667MHz FSB)

Will support Processors with either a 533MHz FSB, or a 667MHz FSB.
667MHz FSB being the maximum it will support.

The processor socket is a Socket M.

Processor upgrade from 1.6 to 2.4

Hi zmoonz,
you must be missing something. Please go over this Intel link:
http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d850mv/sb/CS-009910.htm
Double check your board revision. Instruction / location for this is on the site above. Even though you have the correct revision no# the Pent 4, 2.4GHz CPU can only run with the correct revision (AA numbers) listed.
There are no jumpers on the Intel D850MV MB to help increase the CPU speed nor bios menu to help. Enter the bios. Open Main. This bios does not allow any CPU options.

Processor upgrade

Dear Friend..

Yes, You can upgrade your system with a new Intel Pentium® 4 processor 2.8 GHz, 533 FSB , but only with the BIOS update. Make sure you have the bios version P06 or greater. See the link below:

http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d845grg/sb/cs-009954.htm.

If a get a new processor as above, do not forget to update your bios with the the utility available on intel's site.

I am sure, this helps you. For any additional help, you can ask me..
