Hi … There is more than one way to set up wireless security on this router. I’ll try and help with the manual method, which is the similar for most routers.

Important: use a wired (Ethernet) connection to the router to set up wireless security.

There are four main steps:

1) Login to your router.
You have probably done this already, but here it is again for clarity. Type the router address in the address bar of a web browser. For this router, it is
You should see a popup box. If you have not changed the password, enter username: admin and password: password

This should bring up the configuration screen/user interface.

2) Change the router password.
If you haven’t set a password, this is a good place to start. Go to Maintenance > Set Password. Set and confirm a new password. Click ‘Apply’ when finished.

Make sure this password is not easy to guess, or someone could log into your router and view/change all your settings.

3) Change the SSID (router name):
Go to Wireless Settings. You should the Wireless Network Name or SSID at the top. Change this from the default, NETGEAR, to anything you like –as long as you can remember it. It is case sensitive, and you can use up to 32 letters – but don’t use something that could identify you, or your location. Click ‘Apply’ when finished.

4) Enable encryption

Still in the Wireless Settings menu option, you should see the Wireless Security Options section. You have a number of options for encryption. WPA is safest....I would pick WPA-PSK, though strictly speaking the correct option depends on your wireless adapter. However, this is usually a good choice to start off.

You should see one or more new options pop up. I would leave most settings at the default. However, under Pre-Shared Key/Network Key you should enter a long password, or passphrase, between 8 and 63 letters/numbers long. This can be any series of letters/ numbers, or you can use a phrase with numbers ( eg - 456HappynEWYeartoyou8899). It is case sensitive.

Note down the network key carefully. You will need this to connect wirelessly. (The network key may also be called a WPA shared key, PSK, pre-shared key or passphrase). Click ‘Apply’ when finished.

That's it, you have done enough to secure your network, and can close the screen.

There are further security options to enable if you wish, but these three are the most important.

When you next connect wirelessly, you'll see the router with its new name in your 'available wireless networks'. When you attempt to connect, you are asked for the network key you set in Step 4. If all goes well, you can then save this and will connect automatically in future.

Hope this helps you. Please come back to Fixya if this doesn't work or if you need help with any of it.

    Hi, thanks for the feedback!

The PS3 may be automatically set up to connect to the network under its old name (SSID) and unsecured settings, so will not find it. To regain access to the network, your partner needs to access and adjust the network settings on the PS3. See this page for help with this.

If it does not help, please repost with this new problem if needs be - I'm no PS3 expert, but am sure someone else will be able to help. :) Thanks and all the best.

I forgot my netgear modem router password

If you have changed the default password, you need to reset the router to the factory settings to get in with the default user and password (user admin and password as password, or if that doesn't work try 1234). Note that you will lose the ISP settings and wireless settings when you reset the router.

Here's a video on how to reset the router to the factory default settings:

How do i password protect my router from outsiders connecting

Hi, check out the support pages here:-

Select your model (v3,v4,v5 etc) then look at the setup pages. Set your security to WPA rather then WEP as this is easily crackable, and with WPA you can choose the password. You should also change the routers admin password to be extra safe.
Let me know if you need anymore help.

Can't get my netgear wireless router connected again to the internet

There is a small reset pin hole on the back where the power plugs in. Use a pin and push it in for 30 seconds, while plugged in. This will reset your router back to the factory settings. When done, just run the install disk again.
