Hi pamkrueger, sorry this is rather late reply, but your query seems to have got lost. Your handbook (on you printer CD) provides clear instructions on how to change the ink cartridges. If you've lost the CD, you can download the manual (or read it on-line) from the Epson Website - just click on the link below.

How I change ink in epson sx218

    Hello

First you should make sure you get the correct ink refills. You can order them online, or pick them up at your local office supply store.

Go into you MY COMPUTER icon on your desktop, click on change a setting, click printers and fax, and then right click on your epson printer. Go into properties, then maintenace.

Next, click on the refill or replace ink cartridge. It will then move the printer ink refill into position on the printer. Lift the cover and remove the old cartridge.

Shake the new printer cartridge five times before opening the package. Open the package and insert the ink cartridge with the green circuit board facing the front of the printer.

Close the cover, and push the button on the printer that is blinking. It will take a minute, but should move the ink back into position.

On the computer screen, follow the on screen directions. You can then click finish.

    I have an HP Officejet 6310 All-in-One printer. I

Open the HP Photosmart Software on a Windows computer
    1. Do one of the following:
    – On the Windows desktop, double-click the HP Solution Center icon.
    – In the system tray at the far right of the Windows taskbar, double-click the
    HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon.
    – On the taskbar, click Start, point to Programs or All Programs, select HP,
and then click HP Solution Center.
    2. If you have more than one HP device installed, select the HP All-in-One tab.
Note On a Windows computer, the features available in the HP Solution
Center vary depending on the devices you have installed. The HP Solution
Center is customized to display icons associated with the selected device. If
the selected device is not equipped with a particular feature, then the icon for
that feature does not display in the HP Solution Center.

From here, you can scan, make copies, and perform maintenance procedures such as checking the ink levels for the print cartridges.

Epson C46, changed coloured ink, won't print flashing red light

If the red light is flashing by itself, it means the printer thinks a cartridge is low on ink. Have a look at what the Status Monitor thinks (right click the printer Icon in the bottom Right-Hand corner and select Ink Monitor). This will show which cartridge it is. If it's the new colour cartridge, it means the cartridge is faulty (then replace it), or it is a refilled cartridge that hasn't had it's chip reset to "full". For this you will need a chip resetter, available on E-Bay very cheaply. If it's the black cartridge then replace it.

If both green and red lights are flashing, it usually means the Waste Ink Pads in your printer are saturated with ink and the waste ink "protection" counter has exceeded its limit. You can restore your printer to a working condition immediately by using the SSC utility - download from:

    http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml

Install it, and double click the ssc printer icon in the bottom right corner (System Tray). Choose Configuration and set your printer type (C4x), then close the ssc window. Now right click the ssc icon in the sytem tray and choose Protection Counter. You should see that the current count is above the limit; then choose reset to set it to zero. You will need to fib about having changed the waste ink pads! Turn the printer off then back on again. This will stop the lights flashing and restore normal operation.

However, remember that eventually ink will overflow from the waste ink area and make a dreadful mess, so you must change the waste ink pads before this happens. This requires the disassembly of the printer.

If you decide to have a go at replacing the ink pads yourself, report back and I will provide further help. It is a pretty simple job once someone explains how to get the case apart!
