Cannot connect to wireless on westell 327w modem

I just moved into a new house that has an existing network and internet connection. My room mate has absolutely no problems connecting to the wireless router, however when I try nothing happens. I search for available networks, it shows my router as having an excellent signal yet when I try to connect it just says "Windows cannot connect to "network name"" I have tried with using WEP security and having it completely open but it doesn't change anything either way. I have spent hours searching the net for a fix for this but have not had any luck. If I plug directly into the router with an ethernet cable the internet works just fine, and like I said my room mate has no issues connecting to the wireless.

I am running Windows Vista 64bit and have a Broadcom 4321AG Wi-Fi adapter. The router/modem is a Westell model A90-327W15-06 provided through verizon.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and if you need any additional info please let me know.

    Hello, thanks for the suggestion. MAC filtering was one of the solutions I tried. I've tried it both enabled and disabled but it doesn't change the outcome either way. If it helps, even if I have the WEP security enabled I'm never offered the opportunity to enter a security key when trying to connect. If I try to let Vista diagnose the problem it just says Wireless assosiacion failed because Windows did not receive any response from the wirelesss router access point.

    Hello. you are correct about the network key. I am not offered the option to enter a network key whether is is WEP or WPA.

    As for my wireless adapter I have tried disabling, re-enabling, updating the drivers, and reinstalling

    My laptop is a HP Pavilion dv5-1015nr

    I have been able to connect to other wireless networks in the past with no problems. And I am currently able to connect to a weak signal belonging to a neighbor but since it is weak it does not last very long.

    I asked my room mate how long she has had the router and she told me "forever" so it sounds like it might just come down to a broken router...just seems odd that she has almost the same laptop and is able to connect without any issues. Thanks again for the help!

    older laptops can connect from a few years ago; haven't been able to connect anything since about summer 2007. Status Westell's Trouibleshooting>Statistics>Wireless shows:

    Hello, thanks for posting again. I thought you might have tried this, as you have been very thorough: so we can rule out MAC filtering.

    This is a real puzzle, as you can't connect even if the router signal is unsecured. And you aren't offered the option to enter a network key, whether it's WEP or WPA, is that right?


    So, to help me, or any other Fixya helper out there, can I ask 1) Which model is your computer; 2) Have you been able to connect to any other network with it?

    Next - I would guess you have had a look at the adapter drivers already. But just to be sure, can I ask if you've tried
    A) disabling and re-enabling the adapter, within the device manager
    B) searching for a new adapter driver, or rolling back the driver; or C) uninstalling, then reinstalling the driver (as an advanced user, I'm sure you'd be happy to try this)

    If so, at least we can eliminate that too...

    Hi...have you been able to check whether the router has MAC address filtering enabled? This might lock you out even if you have entered the correct password.

    I'm not familiar with this router, but if you/your room mate could login to the router you should find an option for MAC ID filtering, under Wireless or security options. If it is enabled, you should be able to add your MAC address to the permitted list, and then connect.

    If this isn't the problem or you need a hand with this, please check back here.

    One more suggestion – if it’s possible, to ensure that your wireless adapter is working on the same channel as the router….though again, I think you will have checked this already.


    This is certainly an unusual problem. However, you have an HP laptop, and I have noticed quite a few unusual problems with wireless adapters on HP computers. See, for example, this posting.

    In your position, I might want to try another adapter card, since this often seems to be the culprit – though of course, this is entirely up to you.



    For more expert help in the meantime, perhaps contact one of the top experts directly, or try posting on this forum… it gets a lot more traffic for this type of problem, and there are some very experienced people ready to help.

    I have a netbook that has a broadcom 802.11n network card, and wont connect to estell 327w...was told that it dont put out that mode, for a 802.11n to accept it, I dunno , but Im using a westell 7500 now and it connects right to it...so they might be correct from what I can tell, maybe only solution is to add a router to it that outputs the 802.11n signal.

Problems like this usually happens in the properties of the wireless setup of your connection. last resort here is to reset your modem, but you have to reconfigure as well the settings of your modem in general. for your problem i suggest you call verizon tech support, 1800-567-6789 and say tech support on the voice prompt, they know what to do with your problem. had the same problem before and they were able to fix it, i remember they had me reset my modem.

I think the Westell Router/modem that you have must be the modem for the DSL connection.
Charter is a cable internet service provider.
You can not use 2 modems connected to each other.
You have a charter modem , you can purchase a wireless router only.

Westell versalink 327w from bellsouth can't connect


Howdy,

I do not think this modem will work for you. Contact O.T.C. to be sure. For a few details...

I presume that you can access your Westell wireless modem/router 327w with the IP address of - 192.168.1.254. (Or you can simply type "launchmodem" in the address bar - (one word - no quotes)) This will definitely get you in. You will then see the setup menu. If you see the Bellsouth FastAccess Internet Service logo then you know you definitely have a Bellsouth modem.

Now, let's presume, you are using a Westell wireless modem/router 327w made for Bellsouth/ATT. If this is the case, as stated above, you will see the Bellsouth Logo on the setup page. Additionally, it is stated on the page below, that you cannot use a Bellsouth modem/router for any other ISP (Internet Service Provider) This is due to the Bellsouth/ATT firmware that Westell builds into this modem/router.

This is the relevant quote:
"The BellSouth supplied 327W (model C90-327W30-06) is made exclusively for BellSouth FastAccess. They are functionally different from retail Westells (or any model designed for use with other ISPs) and the firmware between them are not compatible and can not be interchanged."

That being said, you still might attempt to use this 327W with orlando telephone company but I do not know if it will work. (Doubtful...) I use the Bellsouth 327W and it is GREAT. (With Bsouth/ATT) Good luck.

P.S. - Please be advised that Westell does manufacture an identical 327W that does NOT have the Bellsouth/ATT firmware.installed. This is the "generic" version I suppose but I have no experience with this one. If you need more just ask. :)

Can connect only one computer at a time over westell 327W modem


Try this, go to network connections, right click on your connection, click on properties, where it says this connection uses the following items, scroll down to internet protocol, highlight it then click on properties below it, make sure Obtain IP address automatically is checked. do this on both computers. Let me know if it works. lone99star

it seems that the router capability of both devices are conflicting with each other so below are the steps that you can try to setup the two devices to work with each other.

i assume that you are using pppoe connection from at&t and you are using a connection manager. if so, with the current setup that you have right, you need to disable the connection manager on your computer (network connection, disable at&t connection) and set the connection of your web browser to "never dial a connection". check now if you will be able to connect to the internet instead of being prompted for a password. if your problem is still the same, try the steps below.

configure the westell 327w the way it was before (when it works properly when hard wired to the computers but the wireless sucks) but disable the wireless capability. change now the ip address of the smc router from it's default (192.168.2.1) to an ip address which is on the same segment as the ip address of the westell 327w (ex. 192.168.1.2 if your westell 327w is using the ip address 192.168.1.1). disable the dhcp of the smc router (note:make sure that you have configured all the settings that you want to configure with the smc (i.e. wireless settings, port forwarding, etc). then connect the westell to one of the LAN ports of the smc (note: with this setup, the wan port of the smc should not be used) and power cycle everything and check if this setup will work.

you can run another ethernet cable from your westell modem to your laptop. hence, if you want your laptop to connect wirelessly, it must have a wireless card/adapter inside. if it already has a wireless adapter, it should automatically detect your wireless network and you just need to connect to it (note: you need to enter the correct wireless security/network key if you have enabled it on your modem). by default the serial number is the ssid of the router and the wireless security is disabled. but if you are not sure of your wireless security, log on to the modem's web user interface by typing http://192.168.1.1 on your web browser's address. then go to the wireless section and verify your wireless settings from there.

the wireless won't work. i have the same problem. westell modems aren't compatible with wireless function on some laptops therefore routing signal through a wireless router allows that. it can be done, i've done it but after modem was reset having issues. keep searching it can be done...
