I've got a Zanussi washing machine which is about 8 years old.
Only used about once a week. Last couple of weeks I've noticed clothes had a "burnt" smell. Today I noticed some acrid smoke and drum seems to be loose. Any ideas on what would cause these symptons?

THE INNER DRUM IS BAD WITCH LETS IT RUB THE FRONT SEAL OF THE WASHER YOU NEED TO SEE IF YOU CAN MOVE THE DRUM UP ARE DOWN ARE SIDE TO SIDE IF SO ONE OF THE SUPPORTS ON THE BACK BROKE AND THE GET THE SMELL OUT WASH THEM IN WHITE VINAGER
Error code 37 indicates a blocked or not working drain pump but the slight burning smell likely indicates a burned out drain pump motor. Do not use the machine unless the drain pump problem is addressed as it will result in the damage of the motor controller module. It has been found that electrical problem in the drain pump motor leads to the burning out of the motor controller module.
Error code 51 indicates a blocked or damaged diverter valve. It is where the drain pump and the recirculation pump inlet hoses are attached from. It works in directing (diverting) water to the recirculation pump during the wash stage and to the drain pump during the drain and spin stages. I have this problem with my Siemens machine, it is due to mainly running low temp washes and bateria building up in the hoses etc. (more prevalent if the machine is connected directly to the sink and not on a stand pipe). I run a 90 degree cycle every 4 weeks with the machine empty except for two capfuls of baby sterilisng fluid (approx half a mug) I buy stores own as it is cheaper than miltons. The first time I did mine I ran the cycle twice to be sure it was cleared out. My machine is six years old and the first smelly signs were when it was about a year old, I run the maintenance wash religiously ever 4 weeks and run a machine descaler such as oust thru every 4-6 months. Hope this helps. Roni. (ps don't be tempted to use bleach as it foams up and can cause more problems!!)
Considering the info you`ve provided, specific to the history of replacing the drive coupling. You stated that right after replacing the coupling it started to smoke or as you said "I started to smell a burning smell". Can you identify if it was electrical, or was it rubber/plastic ?
I`ve seen these coupling`s when not put on correctly start to rub against the motor or the transmission, you might want to double check your work with installing the coupling.
Aside from that it could possibly be the motor, but if it agitates and manages to advance through the wash & rinse cycle up to the spin, I`d be skeptical of a motor problem. You should check to make sure the lid switch is being fully closed, in the event it isn`t closed properly the unit will do everything except spin.
loose drum sounds like drum bearing Faulty ..Most models sold as spider kit in cludes bearings and spider assembly, if its more than 5 yrs old then perhaps not worhtwhile due to cost of parts here in u/k parts approx £80 =+ Labour..hope this helps you
are you using gel casules that go into the machine instead of powder if so stop using them and go to powder also put a small cap full of bleach in machine and put machine on a hot wash no clothes in.let machine rinse through
