Dark screen My hp dv9000 is a lemon, and the Hong Kong hp Service Center (I purchased the computer in Hong Kong) is giving me nothing but frustration and fees. My current problem is "dark (black) screen". I can view the notebook on external monitor. I think part the problem is with the F4 toggle switch. I am unable to toggle between the notebook and external monitor. The monitor simply flashes when I toggle, but remains 'on' (?on? means: I see the notebook on the monitor) in all toggle settings. However, occasionally the notebook screen flashes a normal fully illuminated screen for less than a second when I am trying to toggle, or the external monitor is adjusting screen resolution. If the external monitor is not connected, with a bright light pointedly directly at the black notebook screen, by adjusting to avoid the bright glare, I can very faintly see the images on the notebook screen. I used this mode to navigate the notebook and save a folder when I was at the hp Service Center and planned to leave the notebook there for repair. I read your fixya notes (thanks, the most authoritative I have seen so far), but the solution you offer for my situation is ?go to the hp service center?. Before I return to the demon center, I want to exhaust all possible fixes at home. I have been to see them twice in the past 2 days, and they have not been truthful, were deceptive, and intentionally tried to create situations that would cost me money. It wasn't until I produced documents/evidence that they would confess, and then to only those instances. I make a point to be very relaxed and civil, but dang, talking to them ruins my entire day. For example, Day-1, they said ?it was impossible that I purchased the computer in HK?. Day-2, I produced sales slip from HK computer store and they say "Oh, yes, they sell your model." Day-1, they say ?we have never seen your computer before, and you have never been here according to our records". Day-2, I returned with 3 previous work orders from the exact same office, including one where they replaced the screen. They said "Oh, yes, we no longer had your records because we just started a new record system." So why not tell me that? Day-1, I asked ?is black screen a common problem with this model, because here I am again with the same problem. Answer: no, this is very rare, in fact I have only seen it once in the past year". Day-2 I returned with 30 pages of internet postings with hundreds of complaints from owners with the same problem as mine. Comment: "Oh, yes, we know there is a 'defect' in this model." however it will cost you between HKD3,000-HKD7,000 to fix your computer (USD385-USD898) for the parts to repair my computer.? There was more, but I left. It was clear hp simply wants to confuse people, hide the truth and extract as much money as they can from the victims (people that purchased their defective merchandise) they created. (So sorry to bore you with this experience. They just make me soooooo angry.....counting 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10........OK, I am more calm). So, is there anything I can do at home? HP Pavillion dv5-1113us laptop lcd screen backlight malfunction. My LCD screen is dark. There is no illuminated light to view browser, desktop, backgrond etc... Laptop boots up and runs but no screen...

I had same problem with HP DV6000. I ordered a new backlight on Ebay from Hong Kong cost $10 found a video on youtube on how to do it by typing in "replacing dv6000 backlight" apart from soldering a couple of wires was pretty straight forward and took less than an hour. Shop had quoted $400 to do this and fine is now working like new again. Good luck from Scott and please dont forget to vote

HP dv9000 getting power but dark monitor

It is probably that the inverter or the backlights have packed up

Turn the machine so that a strong light shines on the screen from the side you may then see the windows splash screen in the background.

Other check is to plug another monitor into the port on the laptop if that works then it is down to the inverter

I have a hp pavilion dv9000. and i need the screw for it.

Check out page 86 for the display schematics. Page 120 outlines the dis-assembly. Page 154 actually describes the screws of which you speak. You may be able to purchase them locally.

Hp pavilion dv2000 notebook will not boot up

i m in Hong Kong. The stupid HP repair center charged US 90 just for inspection!!!!! They they said the whole motherboard had to be replaced, thts additional US 630 dollars, the thing is just 1.5 yr old. They also said i don get to keep the broken mother board after replacement. This is simply irresponsible, unethical, sleazy and UNJUST!!

Thanks. right now the computer is fixed for US70. when i hv time, i'll open it up and see if i can figure it out how it was fixed. The shop suggested tht the computer wont last too long. This is such bad quality for HP... Sorry, i hv to do the following for other victims to find this easily:
(can some creative netizen bring this to the public light to pressure HP to do the ethical things??)
