Usualy its hard drive issue. find your dvd and boot from dvd (if you restart hold down c key) there you can access disk utility from utility menu and check hard drive.

Does the file (or folder) have a little ? symbol on it? If this is the case, it is not finding the startup disk. Try putting in the Mac OSX CD that came with it in the drive and then start up from that (hold the 'c' key down when you press the power button and it should start form the CD). When the CD is loaded, run disk utility to check the Mac hard drive. This may resolve the issue. Otherwise it could be a hard drive failure - in which case it may need to go for repair.
