Dropped my WD portable hard drive and cannot read my files.

After dropping the portable hard drive I connected it to the computer and it asked for the password. Once I enter the password and press enter, it does not do anything else, nor I can see the hard drive. The light of the portable drive stays on when connected. There is anything I can d to retrive my files that are in this portable hard drive?

You can send it in to WD or a company that specializes in data retrieval from dead hard drives and have them copy off the files for you, but it will cost a furtune to do it.

Hi Rui,

Try connecting your portable WD hard drive to any other computer and see whether it's get detected if not, check if the device is present in the "Device management" section from "My computer" option. If the device gets detected then you can perform portable hard drive recovery with the help of Yodot Hard Drive Recovery software.

SOURCE: WD 500g hard drive computer cant read it

Is your hard drive power-up?
Do you hear your hard drive just spinning?

If so, your PCB may went bad. If you hear the hard drive clicking then your PCB or the heads went bad. If you need the data, you might have to ask the data recovery guys to get them back for you or find the PCB on Ebay.

If you don't care about your data, send it back for the warranty replacement

SOURCE: portable hard drive read only on mac

to format the drive so that it works on a mac, it needs to be formatted in FAT32 format rather than NTFS format on the pc. you can download free software called swissknife that lets you do this. make sure you back up everything on the drive before you format it in swissknife other wise all your data will be lost

SOURCE: Problem accessing WD Passport Elite drive

body { background: #FFFFFF; margin: 0px; padding: 4px; font-family: arial, verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; } p { margin:0px; padding:0px; } .spwrap { background: transparent url(../wysiwyg_rte/misspell.gif) repeat-x scroll center bottom; } Hello

Okay , so there are some steps to figure out what is wrong with your external.

Firstly , if your computer makes a sound when you plug in your external , go to Start-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk Management , and see if your external drive is listed here with your local drives. If it is listed , right click on the drive and change the drive letter to make it appear in "my computer".

If your drive does not make a connection sound when connecting to your computer and also does not show up , please follow the next step.

Remove the hard drive from the casing if possible and install it in your computer case or another external case.If the drive works , the problem is with the casing and you can ignore the drive.

Now , if the problem is with the casing , there are still 3 possibilities.

  1. The USB cable between the drive and the computer may be damaged.
  2. The circuit board which connects your drive to the interface of the external may be blown.
  3. The power supply (if applicable) may have a blown transformer.
The latter is the easiest to diagnose , does your external light up at all when you plug in the power? If not , then this is probably your problem. On the bottom of the adapter is a label which you will be able to use to have a new adapter made at your local electronics shop and this will cost about $30 max. They will also be able to test the adapter with a clamp meter to see if this is really the problem and this should be free.

The second component you want to test is the USB cable. If you have a printer , swop out the cables and see if your printer functions normally. Most externals use the same connector so you should be able to test it in this manner. If the cable works go on to the last step. If the cable is defective , replace it with a new one which you can find for about $10 at most electronics and chain stores.

The last component to test is the circuit board. This is a bit of a grey zone as you probably won't be able to spot the blown component unless it failed really badly. With the casing already opened , locate the external's circuit board and check to see if you have any blackened components or fluids leaking from some components. If all the other components of the external worked perfectly , then this is the faulty part. It is not really economical to replace the circuit as most of the time it is out of production by the time you need to replace it and it still costs a lot even if it is available so if your drive is working perfectly when connected via sata or IDE on your computer , the best is to buy a new casing and place your old drive in the new casing.

A casing costs about $50 and you could get it at most tech shops and big chain stores like Best Buy.

I hope this solves your problem and please reply if you need more help.

Kind Regards
Andrea

My WD My Passport external Hard Drive ! TB formatted for Mac is not reading my files

A Windows PC computer will not read files on the WD hard drive that has been formatted on a MAC.
The fix.
Copy your photos onto the MAC computer then remove the WD hard drive and connect it to your Windows PC and format the WD hard drive in FAT32 file system.
After formatting has been completed remove the WD hard disk and connect it to the MAC computer. The MAC can read and write to a Windows FAT32 formated hard disk. You can now copy the photos from the MAC to the WD hard disk. When copying is complete, remove the WD hard drive and connect the WD hard drive to your Windows PC and you can now copy the photo from the WD hard disk to your Windows PC.

Dropped it once and then it was working but not anymore, when connect to the computer the light is still on but the computer doesn't recognize it.

Hi ,
The best way I can think to recover your data is to extract the HDD from it's box ( box will be lost ) and connect the drive directly inside your desktop .
You could also try a recovery tool , from here for instance
http://www.geckoandfly.com/3163/crashed-hard-drive-hard-disk-data-recovery-software-tools-and-service/
Otherwise , you could ask a recovery office to do the job for you but it will cost you lots of monney .
Best regards .

All my music that was on my wd are gone when i plug in my wd it doesn't show anything

Connect the WD Passport to a different computer, to see if YOUR computer is the problem.

If that does not help, any external disk-drive has two major components, inside the enclosure:
* disk-drive
* USB-to-disk-drive adapter

Open the case, and disconnect the disk-drive from the adapter, and remove the disk-drive. Connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if the files can be "directly" read from the disk-drive.

Dropped it and now can't access the files

Once any hard drive is dropped it is not likely that it will work again. They are too fragile.

your hard drive has either a crashed head,ir amisalligned head due to dropping it several times. also head stuck to platter is the result of dropping it.and may be the motor of the hard drive has lost its central axis and has got jammed.
if your drive is still spinning i am sure it has head crash problem only.
please try to either get it replaced if its under warrenty.
if you wish to recover data , please pm me.
