    It is an external HDD.

This product is an empty case that you put an ordinary HDD into to make an external HDD. My computer wont recognise it and I thought the problem may be the jumper settings.

You mention USB 2 in the title, is this an external drive?

No Jumper Settings are required for external drives, they are all setup as Slave by default, and if you try to open the case, to take the drive out and change the Jumper Settings, you will invalidate the warranty.

Well, that's a whole different issue. The correct answer to "is this an external drive?" would be, "No, it's an internal hard drive that I am placing into an empty casing for external use."

Samsung has the jumper settings here.

And Samsung's general HDD troubleshooting guide is here.

Hi, The drive you are connecting to this USB enclosure can be set up as an auto select, master, or slave drive by changing the jumpers. Suggest to check your USB enclosure manual to see what is required for this device as to the configuration of the drive jumpers. Regards, Rongg

Check the jumper settings of the IDE hard drive you have in the enclosure for compatibility in your setup. (Choices are Master, Slave and Cable Select).

Replace the cable you are currently using with your printer cable and see if it is the cable if that is not the case I would open the case, and check your connections on the hard drive, there is a chance it might have come loose.

I borrowed a MadDog portable hard disc read but Windows won't see

If Windows does not detect the hard-drive, then the electronics on the hard-drive are "dead", and only a professional "Data Recovery Service" should be retained to pull data from the hard-drive.

P.S. Be sure that the jumper on the hard-drive is set to 'MASTER', not to 'SLAVE', not to 'CABLE SELECT'.

Hard Drive not mounting

Check the jumper on each hard-drive.

My guess is that the WD drive has the jumper in the "correct" position, for mounting inside an external case, while the other drives have their jumper set to an "incorrect" position.

Set the jumper to MA(ster), not to SL(ave), nor to C(able)S(elect).

Enclosure does not read any hard drive.

The drive may need to be formatted. The manual that comes with the enclosure has instructions how to do this with a variety of OS's.

3.5" usb2.o hard drive enclosure

You do not need to install a driver for Windows XP and Vista, it is already built in. The CD may however contain optional software for initializing the hard drive the first time, and for making backups later.

Do you know if the hard disk is good? Does it spin up when you turn it on? You can hear and feel it spin up.

If this is not a SATA drive, make sure that the jumper is set correctly. Most enclosures require the drive to be jumpered for Master, sometimes for Single or CS. Check the top of the hard disk for a guide to how to set or remove the jumper.

You might try connecting it to different USB ports, some are faulty.
