Question about Maytag PGR5710 Performa Gas Kitchen Range

Trouble lighting oven, smell gas

We have had our Maytag range Model MGR5720BDW for about 6 years. Today the oven lit and began to heat up, then the flame seemed to sputter out and the smell of gas became really strong. I turned it off and aired it out, then tried to restart it. Again, I heard the gas turn on and the ignitor try to light it, a "whoomp" noise, but no flame. The gas automatically turned off a few seconds later. Is it possible that the ignitor is just dirty or should we replace it? If we need to replace it, is it a repair that can be done by a fairly handy person or do we need to call a repair person? And where can we order any part we may need? Thanks for your help.

Sounds like an igniter problem to me. They are heating elements with a limited life & are quite easy to change. There is one for the broiler on the top as well. Why not try swapping them to confirm this diagnosis. If you never use broil then your problem may be solved!

Personally, I do not cook indoors with gas (outdoor, yes), but any time you have an issue with gas cooking ranges....you need to call a professional. We are connected to Centerpoint Energy and so I would call them. this could be a very serious gas leak issue. You don't say if you are on a propane conversion type, or utility supplied gas. that smell could be your only clue to something not good. Did your smoke alarm or CO detector go off? You could call your local gas company to ask the questions, if there is a warranty for your range, call that store.
You don't say the age of the range. That comes into play as making suggestions. Please error on the side of safety. Get a professional to deal with this.

The problem is usually the igniter not reaching the correct amp draw .When the igniter does not reach the correct amp draw it may allow the gas valve to partially open or not open at all. The igniters are inexpensive and easy to replace. This video will walk you thru the correct procedure for testing an oven igniter. It may be a different model but the testing will be the same. You can also enter your model # for diagrams and illustrations of your specific model. Not all models are available. All parts come with installation instructions.

DCS commercial range #36-6-1L running propane. 6 burner tops light fine, but the oven has just stopped lighting after 7 years. When I try to relight the pilot light (depress red button, click cliker) it...

You might need a new thermocouple. The thermocouple tells the oven that the pilot is lit and that it is ok to let gas into the oven. It is the metal rod that is connected to the pilot. They are fairly cheap and easy to install.

Occasional gas smell

If you have a burner lit and gas build up, strong smell etc., my advice would be to stop using the oven immediately! You no way gas should come out, build up, to the point you smell it, Especially while a burner is lit. Dangerous condition.

Oven will not heat up, I can not hear any gas or smell any when attempting to light the oven

If the pilot is lit in the oven and does not light, the thermocouple on the gas valve is bad. The entire gas valve must be replaced.

Maytag Gas range

We had the same thing happen and had the Atco Gas company come out to look at it.  Our regulator was not working properly which caused CO to be relased.  We were told that the problem could be fixed for about $250-300 (CAN.) including parts and labour.
