You will need a power adapter with 12 Volts DC with .42 amps. The barrel will have to be negative and the tip is positive. It has these specs written on the back of the modem, just above the power port.

Power supply polarity for Viking K-2000-DVA

The center pin of the power jack on the unit is negative (-) 12 volts DC. It is also common to all of the input common terminals. This is important when using a common power supply for other equipment such as 12 volt battery backed system for an alarm system.

Voltage for Dynalink V1433VQE

For future reference, it is usually 9-12v AC for an external serial modem because it has to be able to generate both positive and negative 12v rails to be able to communicate over RS232 serial.

A serial modem that requires AC but is provided with 12v DC will power on but won't "talk" to the PC.

15vac is pretty normal for a laptop battery. Its likely that your laptops power inlet has malfunctioned and no longer is capable of recieving voltage. Besides, your power terminal should be getting 120vac, it's just your adaptor that reduces the voltage to 15-19 vac usuable for laptop batteries. Also your laptop computer is rather an older model, my mother has one and I've worked with it a while. Laptop batteries also don't last forever, It might be wise to move onto a better laptop.

2wire failure

Hi der... well the issue your facing is simple to say ur power adaptor is faulty. Usually its due to some electrical shorts or maybe some heavy lightnings. You can always have a remedy for it.

1st : Buy a new adaptor.
2nd: call ur ISP to have it replaced if ur still under some contract term or if the modem is still under warranty.
3rd : you can buy ur own ADSL2+ modem from supporting outlets . Make sure ur isp supports this modem.

This are the solutions for ur problem pal.. So make a wise decision.. Any needs and help post it to FixYa..ANd the experts here will fix ya..!

No power

If you have a multimeter, put it onto the DC voltage setting. Pull the plug out of the back of modem, and put one probe on the outside of the plug and one on the inside. If the multimeter reads a voltage somewhere between 6 and 15 volts, your modem is hooped. If it reads below 5 volts, you need a new power supply (plug).

Input voltage for Boca 56K tidalwave external modem

There should be a input voltage and polarity (pin) diagram next to the power input socket. Normally 12 volt, but don't quote me on that as I just replaced my modem, like for like and the old one was 12v. and the new one 25v. so if you can eliminate your power adapters one by one by the manufacturers names on each, then thats your best bet.
