Western Digital My Book Essential 500GB External USB 2.01st off I run XP pro SP2. I have two a 360GB and a 500GB mine shows up in My Computer as local disks, not my book. If I click on them they show up blank. These are all my software backups and are hardly empty. If click properties and populate volumes it says partition style MBR (master boot record) and no I did not install windows with them hooked up.

What OS are you running? If it is a Mac, does the Disk Utility see it? If it is detected but it doesn't mount it needs to be initialised partitioned and formatted. You may need to partition it in smaller chunks if the computer or OS is older as they were not made with 500 GB and 1 TB drives in mind.
If it is Windows, try running the utility that came with it and see if it is recognised, or try the Disk Management tool in the Administrative Tools section of the control panel. If it is not seen by those utilities at all, it is possible you have either a bad cable, the drive is bad or the driver is not loaded for whatever reason.

Check those things and see if you get anywhere. Feel free to contact me again if you need any more help.

Cheers.

Blinking blue light and loud fan

When does the "blinking blue light" appear? As far as the loud fan is concerned, it is possible that your computer has dust built-up inside the case. Open it and try to clean it (GENTLY) with a blower, or a can of compressed air (do NOT use a vacuum cleaner). Specially clean the fan in the middle of the case.

To create a new folder on the desktop right-click on the mouse and select New Folder from the drop-down menu.
If you do not have a mouse connected, press the control key while clicking the desktop background, and select New Folder from the drop-down menu. The folder should appear near the area of the desktop you clicked with 'untitled folder' highlighted in light blue. You can now type a name for your new folder. Press return/enter when you are done naming your folder.

What does the blue blinking light at the very bottom, under the blue power button indicates?

According to the Dell 531 owners manual:

"Drive activity light-
blue light - A blinking blue light indicates the computer is reading data from or writing data to the SATA hard drive, CD, DVD or HDD."

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/inspd531/en/OM/appendix.htm

Safe to ignore. It will blink even when the computer appears to be idle.
