Plug hdd to usb, after that, right click on my computer and go to manage, there go to disk management. You should see there all hard drives connected to your computer. Here localize your external hdd and see if it is initialized (you'l see in the right side of device the status), if it's not initialized right click on that area and initialize the hdd. After that go on the left side again right click and there could be two ways to format these hdd 1. if windows see something on hdd right click and go to format and follow the instructions from there 2. if windows don't see any partition there you must create one. Right click on hdd and select create new partition and after that follow instruction on your screen
-it sounds like your external drive had a head crash. The noise is normally grinding noise. -if your data on the drive is priceless, you may need to consult recovery experts like http://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com/.
you can just connect your hard drive to your pc and open the folder from my computer and select the folders that you want to delete and press the delete key in your keyboard. then the computer will ask you that " you want to delete the selected files and folders?" then you press ok. it will deleted
If it is connected to the mains ,make sure it's correctly connected.
Also try another USB port on the computer.
If it used to switch on before or even make sounds to show that it was working and now it doesnt then it's either a problem with the harddrive case or the drive itself.
To retrieve the information on it(if the problem is infact the case) then you will need to open the case and remove the harddrive from it and then buy an external USB case for it ,or if you are technically good with computers attach it internally to the computer.
