Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console
This is the number one problem PS3 owners encounter. It's a Sony defect. The blu-ray drive is a three part laser ( cd / dvd / blu-ray). The blu-ray portion always goes out. That's why you're still able to play a few of your DVD PS1 and PS2 games.

Clean the LAsers Lens with Q-tip lightly dampened with Glass cleaner, then dry the lens. Try it see if that gets it going again.
If not your lasers lens and supporting frame is probably melting down. You will need a new laser.
Click on "repair directory" at the bottom of this screen. Then click on "Video Game consoles" Pick a good repair shop.

Question for all who have has the disc read error problem...
Does your PS3 boot into the menu? If so, see if you can download a demo game and play that. If you can play a downloaded demo game, it generally means that your all your PS3 hardware, except the laser lens, is functioning properly. My friend's PS3 had the same problem. It would not play any discs he puts in, but will play a downloaded demo. His PS3 is no longer under Sony's warranty, so I fixed it by replacing the laser lens for him. You can buy a replacement lens on Ebay. However, if your PS3 is still under Sony's warranty, i suggest sending it back to them for repairs.

It may not be the diode itself, but the drive's circuitry. I just worked a similar problem with a tested working laser and gt the same problem.
I have not been able to narrow it farther due to my lack of another tested working drive. If someone else can confrm. That could also be the problem.

just fold a buisness car in half the long way. don't fold it hard.
slide it in the disk slot about an inch to open up the rubber flaps.
then just blow hard.
TIP: try not to spit in there . first clean the dust off the ps3..... dont want to take the chance of putting more dust in there. canned air will work too just make sure you spray air not liquid .
If your diode is not burned out yet then this should fix your problem.
1. Plug in controller
2. Have system in standby mode (red light)
3. Hold down power button for a full cycle (will turn on and back off again)
4. Hold power button again will hear 2 single beeps then a double beep.
5. As soon as you hear the double beep immediately remove your finger from the power button.
6. Hit the PS button on controller when it tells you to
7. Go to only option 3 (restore)
8. warning: select any other option and you can wipe out everything only use option 3
9. Follow on screen prompts
