Question about Philips Magnavox 51MP392H Rear Projection Television

2 Answers

I have magnovox 46 inch rear projection the picture is blurred

And yellow. I took the screen off and the bulbs are all on, but I am not sure how to tell that they need to be changed, or is it the fact that the color is off that means that they need to be changed? Also where is the model number?

Spot on, The blue bulb is the culprit. However I just talked to a tv repair person who wants to charge me 325.00 to come out and fix it.

  • dixon5 Dec 22, 2008

Either I or my husband can do it. What do I do? Where do I get the fluid?

  • dixon5 Dec 23, 2008

I just finished doing some research and I think I've found the oil. I did not get a response back from you on the previous post, but I am very interested in doing it myself, I just want to make sure that I get the right stuff. I saw a previous post on the subject and I am wondering if the oil (crt coolant) is the same used for all and do I have to buy it online.

You can get a complete CRT fluid kit from www.TvRepairKits.com.

The kits also include a step by step photo instruction guide for the Magnavox TV sets.

Look inside of the tube from the top. They used to have a problem with fungus growing in the fluid that covers the face of the tube. Put the set on video input so it's a dark screen and then put the menu on. You'll be able to tell in the blue and green tubes that the letters are not clear. The red tube almost never is affected. You will see the slime covering the face of the tube. Before looking inside the tube, try this first: You can always tell with writing on the screen. Try and turn the color setting all the way down so you get a black & white picture. If the writing is still bad or you see the blue lines are fat compared to the red, then it's a tube problem. You can also tell in the convergance menu. The lines should be the same thickness. Changing the fluid shouldn't be that expensive. Have someone do it for you. But if the tube itself is bad/weak, tube has no sline, but still looks out of focus...fat lines..etc... forget about it. Magnavox/phillips sets are very poorly made sets. I wouldn't put money into repairs of more than $150-$200. They just don't hold-up. The model number should be on a sticker on the back. May have fallen off. Could be inside set after you remove the back.

$350 to change the fluid?????? That's way too much!!!. I can tell you how to do it if your up to the challenge. It's not that bad, just time consuming. Are you mechanicaly inclined? It's just taking off the front screen and back cover, then pulling the tube out to change the fluid. I'll tell you where to buy fluid etc.... Let me know.

Sorry, busy at work, and I only get so much time to help. What you need is projection CRT fluid. MCMelectronics.com is where I get it from. It's all the same....some is expensive...some cheap. It's clear antifreeze ethol-glycol.. You want enough to do 2 tubes. Blue and green should both be done. Give me your E-mail address to chrisr696@live.com and I'll give you my work E-mail. Then I can send you pictures and diagrams. Try and get the model# off the sticker in back. Or inside the back of set. Also look for a PTV### chassis number like PTV810. That will help me find the correct service info.

http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/20... is the coolant and it's cheap there. Get 2 bottles.

I looked at that. $60.00 with shipping compared to a tad over $20.00 with shipping. The only difference is you get a pump. Here's the thing. If you want to just change the fluid, then go for the pump. If you want to really remove the "funk" from the face of the picture tube and make sure it don't grow back in 6 months, you MUST dissassemble the front of the tube and clean it. I pull the tubes to do that. Your only talking 8 screws and high voltage lead, yoke wire plug and converance plug wire and then pull off the circuit board from the bottom of the tube and un hook 2 black ground wires. That's all the extra work needed to replace the fluid, the way I do it. Why would you want to put new fluid in a contaminated tube? Plus, the light still has to pass through the layer of scum stuck to the face. Just don't make sence to me. If your going to change it, do it right one time and be done with it. Otherwise you won't be happy with the results. The set will look like brand new when done correctly. That's the best part of the job, is seeing people react to a job well done!!!!....Priceless!!!!

Sounds like your convergence is just out. First make sure the mirror in back is pulled out completely (if you have that model). Otherwise, there is a convergence feature on the menu that should fix it all.

Some tech told me that it was the power control that was bad. I can see the picture, just very blurred.
Is he right? The tv was not move at all before this started happening.

1) In customer menu, adjust all video controls to center, then
increase "picture" to 3/4
2)Locate focus/screen adjust block above chassis...adjust
RGB screen controls for best mixture = B/W tracking..
Check with customer color level at minimum..should look gray.
If you turn screen controls up too much, you will see faint
re-trace lines in picture.....once B/W looks good,put color level
back to middle...................................................T.
