Dell dimension 4600 microphone problem

I had reformatted and installing xp pro on my dimension 4600, and i do not have any conflicts in my device manager with drivers. My audio works correctly, but my microphone does nothing but sound like wind is blowing on it constantly. I have uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it. But still nothing. HELP!!!

no not yet. i guess i was just hoping that it was just a driver issue. is there anyway i can confirm that possibly without having to buy one and make sure?

the only thing that throws me off is that even with the mic out, it still produces a fuzz that fluctuates. K. Thanks for your time.

Have you tried any other sound card? I would dare bet that you have a bad mic port on your mainboard.

If this is a clean install (formatted drive and reinstalled) then the likelihood of it being a driver issue is greatly reduced. Did you download the drivers from Dell?
Secondly, the fact that the audio works makes me think it is a hardware issue. Since audio and the mic are connected in the device manager, the easiest solution might be to replace the sound with a PCI soundcard. They are fairly inexpensive, and they will generally include the drivers with the disk.

If you decide to replace the sound card, you should disable the on board sound in the device manager or in the BIOS.

Very broad problem. You can re-seat card, or use a different slot if possible. You can test card on another PC. You can wipe PC and do a clean install. This may be the surest way to determine if the the card is bad or driver conflict with OS.

Have a dell desktop xp home edition (no manual) - does this desktop have a wireless turn on/off button like a laptop does for wifi? thx

No, it doesn't. The Dell Dimension 4600 doesn't come with wireless. If you want to add wireless connectivity, you will need a Wi-Fi PCI card, like the following:

This problem happens usually when Windows service pack 2 has a conflict with 3rd party software like T.V. Media or service pack 3 conflicts with prior installation of SP2.

If this is from SP2 Use recovery console to remove SP2

Driver problems

JPWatson, This link will take you to the drivers for your Dimension 4600 with Windows XP: As far as the PC showing you already have a connection I would ignore that for now. Just download the appropriate drivers from this Dell page including the network interface card drivers and install them first. After you have rebooted and verified that the hardware devices are working correctly then start troubleshooting your Internet connection if it is still necessary.
