I don't have the total solution, but I will tell you this, don't hit restore unless you are fully backed up and you have confirmed your back-ups. I had the same problem - dead hard drive, hit restore and it wiped out any chance I had at recovering the files I had not yet backed up.

I am assuming you have tried to do a safe start, if not, that would be the first place I'd start. A lot of times this will set things right.

Beyond that however, the computer mfg support should be able to walk you through opening the bios and checking to see if the hard drive is functioning. If not, it will have to be replaced.

You have a virus in your computer. Boot the computer, immediately hit the delete key until you can get to the setup screen and it will allow you to format your drive.

Dell dimension e310 desktop error message unmountable boot volu me

> unmountable

The disk-drive cannot be "mounted", i.e., the motherboard cannot access it

> boot volume

To "boot" a computer is to load a small "loader" program from the disk-drive;
that program "pulls-up-by-the-boot-straps", to read the rest of Windows from the disk-drive.

If the disk-drive has "failed", then you'll get messages like the one that you reported.

Replace the disk-drive.

I have a code 7

If this issue can be fixed, a good start is going to be..

Boot from your windows installation cd, then access the recovery console.

At the command prompt your going to need to run chkdsk /r

here is a link to microsoft that goes into greater detail on this issue.

Windows wont boot. it keeps coming up to start in safe mode, etc. then loops into it again. any help?? I don't have the cd which came with the computer. I get a message "unmountable boot volume"

Windows operating system might have changed recently. You may need to repair install the operating system. Does the recovery of computer work? I could say if you don't have the repair CD , you could get one from Microsoft. Microsoft customer service person ask you some questions about the legal copy of the software on the computer. If you had registeted microsoft software then it would cost you $10 for CD.

Gateway Model #GT5056 - Unmountable Boot Volume

one cheap way is to purchase a used hdd from a thrift store or a comp shop. install your software on it and plug your old drive as a secondary. this way u can extract all your files off. then reprogram that drive. this should cost $30 at the most for a 30 gig drive

Error message: unmountable boot volumn

Yes you can save your computer. But if you are running Windows XP, you need the Windows XP CD. Boot with that CD and at the first prompt, press "r" to get to the repair option.
Press 1 to choose your windows instalaltion and then at the prompt, type the following

chkdsk /r

this might take some time but at the end, type the work exit and you should be back in business.
