No sound output from my XDA11i

I was in the middle of synchronising my XDA11i and I received a phone call. The phone was making a sound at this stage. The XDA seemed to freeze. I did a soft reset and everything seemed to be OK accept when I received a subsequent phone it vibrated but no sound and I could not hear the caller.
I have followed the instructions re: tapping the speaker icon and checking the settings without success
