Got the same problem and the quote to fix it was $185 plus taxes and shipping.
Called Nikon (I registered my product online) and when I gave them the serial number and they checked my registration online, the emailed me the link to get it fixed free of charge because there is a 'known issue'.

Hope this helps.
Your lens is jammed in-between when your lens extends and contracts. OR The current lens was not put on properly.
SOURCE: NIKON L15 LENS ERROR
Lens errors, must be fixed by a camera repair shop. They are usually caused by impact of the lens with an object or sand from a beach. Repair estimates range from $50 to $100. Get a new camera if it is closer to $100. Suggest a internal zoom lens like the Fuji Z10fd.
SOURCE: Nikon S200 Lens stuck inside
I had the same issue with my S210, so after reading other people's advice to send it in to Nikon and since that was going to probably cost me as much as the camera itself I figured it wouldn't hurt to try a little something. The lens on mine was a hair off center or had been pushed in on one side (barely - looking at yours you may be able to tell which side) - mine was in my purse also. So, I took my handy dandy skinny prying instrument (normal kitchen butter knife) took the battery out to make it try to open again, then when I popped the battery in as the lens tried to push out I pried the side I thought was a little lower back towards center...I heard a little pop and it worked! The lens came all of the way out and it's all good.
So, use gentle hands and try if you want, but don't think I warranty this!
SOURCE: nikon s200 when camera turned on lens error
You may have a jammed lens assy. When the camera is turned on, camera go through a few stages of processing to be ready to take picutre and if the lens does not respond mechanically, it will give you a lens error. Lens jams due to sand or impact (even unnoticable light impact). If the lens is extended out you can somehow grab the lens barrel lightly with two fingers while turning the power on and nudge it side by side. If this did not help, take it to a reliable local technician for a diagnostic(should be free). Good luck. -james

Try to reset the camera or take it into Nikon it might be damaged

The lens does not fully extend, that's why it tries again. The lens probably does not extend or retract because of debris or a misaligned gear box. The
lens can in about 50% of the cases be repaired without having to replace it. Try to
return to manufacturer first. If you're out of warranty, there are
third party place that fix them such as camera lens repairs. If you want to do it yourself, there are also free camera repair guide websites that show you how to replace the lens, the replacement part is usually available on ebay.
