Question about Western Digital 500GB My Book World Edition 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Wiped out partition on WD500GB My Book

I went to reformat my C: drive and inadvertantly removed the partition on my My Book external drive. Computer doesn't recognize that drive anymore. When I plug in the firewire cable, I hear the sound saying a connection was made, but I see nothing in My Computer.
1) How do I get the computer to recognize that drive?
2) Can I put in a new partition and save the data that was on there?

Try using a recovery utility like Acronis or R-Studio. I have used R-Studio alot and it always comes through for me. The drive will be recognised but no drive letter will be assigned. Run the programme and after it scans the drive, select what you want to save and save it to another drive or partition.
That should do it.

My hard drive wants me to format it, but I don't want to lose all of my data. How do I get around formatting it?

The windows and mac operational systems are completely different. When you hooked it to the mac machine it reconfigured the hardware to work on the new system, now that you switced it back to windows there is a compatability issue leaving reformat as the only solution. To try and recover files you will need a tower computer, if this fails, the computer repair shop is your only hope since they have additional tools that can extract the files.

It does not read when plugged in, I had problems with it when for no reason it went from MY BOOK to Drive after several hours of trying to fix it, I eventually got into my music then I went to safely...

Turn on your computer, plug in your My Book external hard drive (double check that the power is properly plugged into the wall and the hard drive), If nothing happens then right-click My Computer (or labeled just as Computer in Windows Vista or Windows 7), Choose Manage, Choose Storage, Choose Disc Management, towards the bottom of the window you will see Disc0, 1, 2, & so on. Are any of them colored with a Black bar across the top and labeled as Unallocated Space? If so, then right-click in that box and choose create simple volume and format in NTFS. If you don't see your hard drive listed in this window, or if you are unable to partition and format the drive, then most likely your hard drive isn't any good anymore. If it's under warranty, then return it for a new one.

Same WD Passport problem as By sowhatbks on Oct 06, 2009

I'm afraid your data is most likely gone. The drive volume label "My Book" is not there because the partition is corrupt or it was deleted. You can try to recover the data with a bootable disk utility but this seldom works. I would delete the partition, run a WD utility to check the disk, (You can download it from WD web site) Then, if the disk tests ok, create a new partition and format it.

My Book Essential does not show on My Computer - Can't access files.

No matter what I tried, I ws unable to get my "MyBook" working. My solution? Remove from case and voila, it's just a seial ATA drive attached to a small circuit board which converts it to USB. Disconnect from the circuitboard and plug into the motherboard. Imstant success. It failed as an external drive three weeks after the warranty ran out. WD support was zero help.

Same problem. Had to ditch the HD swaping and just use a network share. I lost 2 500 Western Digitals the same way and they can only say ," so sorry for you".
