Screen looks like it is operating in 'Safe' mode. I think video card overheated how do I check?

See if you can run the Pre-boot System Assessment(PSA) diagnostics. To run the PSA+ Diagnostics on this system, perform one ofthe following actions: b> 1) Hold downthe key while pressing the power button. b> 2) Turn onthe system, press at the initial Dell™ logo screen, and select "Diagnostics" from the bootmenu. b> 3) Disconnectthe AC power and remove the battery. While holding down the power button, insert the AC connector into the back of the system. The system then starts andthe message "Diagnostic bootselected" displays. The system then launches the PSA+Diagnostics.
If diagnostics pass then you have a software issue.

your HDD may be corrupted, re-installing windows vista is one option. Your best bet is if you have/ can obtain a copy of windows vista run setup and try the repair wizard in the windows vista setup, the wizard automatically finds errors and missing files and replaces them therefore solving any errors in your HDD. you can also try to use the recovery wizard from your recovery disc. best of luck

Sounds like a definite no boot issue. Turn the system on to the diagnostics (Fn + Power) see if the diagnostics show a failure. If the hard drive passes diagnostics, then boot to the XP CD and try repairing the WIndows installtion

fortunately dell has built in diagnostics that can assist you with identifying the problem. here is a link on how to run them. if the drive is bad then you would need to replace it and reinstall windows and drivers. if it is good then run memory diagnostics as well just to be safe. if both pass then you may have to do a destructive reinstall of windows because you most likely have a virus issue. copy and paste this link into your browser it will help you run the diagnostics.

Hi, I have a dell d505 laptop and am getting a dst short test error when running the diagnostic. someone told me I should run the recovery cd, but I no longer have it. How can I get one ? Is there a way to...

You can download Dell Diagnostics from Support.dell.com for your model system, and see if you get a failure indication there. If you get a failure during Dell Diags, then it should help you ID the failed component. If the Diags pass, it is only indication it didn't FIND a failure, so there still MAY be a hardware issue. (Diagnostics only look for a limited selection of possible errors, so failures may still exist, even though a component passed a diagnostic.)

If you are having a memory issue and have two ram modules, best test is to try each module in the system by itself and see if issues go away, if they do, then the one module that generates errors is likely bad.

Power off automatically after 10 - 15 min

Your hard disk has crashed. Take it in to a computer store (Microcenter, Fry's, TigerDirect, or Best Buy) to get a new one. The data on your computer's hard drive may not be able to be saved.
