I have a similar problem, except mine has a black rectangle at the top of the screen, and the missing horizontal video lines are dispersed like a double image just below in the area that's viewable. It's the JVC AV-27020.

The problem is known as vertical foldover. There is a Bad electrolytic in Vertical sweep circuit.

it could be you have pressed the old teletext service button, look for a button with 3 lines on it in a box and press it or try turning the tv off at the plug then back on again.

If you are not hearing dialogue, then check your center speaker. Most voice tracks are routed to the center channel

Black box in middle of screen/picture

Closed Caption function to that channel you select is ON. Make it OFF, when you are in that channel which displays this black box. It will be best to reset the TV to its factory settings first, and then re-tune it. for more details, refer its user manual.

There is a rectangular black box across the screen - it goes away when I use the favorite button and have multi screens showing - it returns when I close out the favorites. Color, sound, picture quality...

in the customer menu--find the closed caption settings---you will most likely find the set has been set to TEXT 1---with the remote select either CC1 or OFF---the black box was for text (books) and was not ever used much---usually someone engages it by accident

Try and turn off the closed captioning. I had the same problem and it turned out that the closed captioning was on t1 instead of OFF. Hope this helps!!!!
