Could it be the motor trying to turn over but getting insufficient voltage from the foot control. It could be either a faulty foot control or if it's when you try to sew, it could be the motor on the way out.
Please give us more info.

This is pretty much a NORMAL start up noise on all of the 1000 to 1031 series Berninas. Most likely it is the needle bar centering itself. Don't worry about it unless its really bad. If its really bad you need a tech to clean, oil, and adjust it. Or at least adjust it if you can clean and oil it. Rick

I just had that problem. As it turned out, it was the parts complaining they were too dry. I would highly suggest oiling your machine (if the areas are not marked, look for places where the machinery goes back and forth a lot, or areas that are already slightly greasy).
The shaft had gotten too dry, so it just stopped (seized up) running. I hadn't oiled it in a while, so I should have known better. After taking apart the bobbin area and making sure nothing was stuck in there, changing the needle in case I bent it, checking all the insides for slipped belts, etc and not finding anything wrong anyplace else , the oil did the job finally.
