The icon you're talking about just refers to whether you're on the EDGE network, or GPRS, or 3G. It doesn't affect your battery life at all. You don't even really need to worry about it, perhaps your grandson just turned the setting on which enables the phone to see what different signals are around.

If your battery is dying quickly, it may be that you're over charging it, and it's messed it up. Let it go completely flat, then cahrge for about four straight hours (at least, so you know it's fully charged). Use the phone until it goes completely dead, then follow the process two or three times again. You should find that the battery lasts longer after this.

Can anyone explain this icon that has appeared on my phone after my grandson was playing with it it has a letter G then a bar with sides and an upward arrow

do not worry. your grandson has caused no problems. this refers to the type of signal you are currently recieving. This icon means "GPRS" signal which, for lack of a better term, means you have a stronger signal than if you saw the letter "E" in its place. the timing was most likely coincidental.

Motorola V9 ring tones

if you got your phone from a service provider, then it means your ringtone are locked to only theirs. you would need to download from their selection only.
The only other option is bring it to a local repair shop and have it debranded. not all service centers can do this, if you need it done we do it all the time - the cost is $40 + shipping
