Question about RCA RT2770 Theater System

2 Answers

I need a new Resistor for my RCA RT2770 the number by the resistor is R202, does anyone know what size the resistor is?

I just need to know what kind of resistor to get if I dont already have on I can see the colors of the rings on it still but I dont know what size it is from top to bottom the lines are a very light brown, then an orange, then a either very very dark brown or a black, and last a medium shade brown

I have the same problem with my RT2770, which uses the same power supply board. R202 along with C211 make up the "snubber network" for the fast action diode pack (TO5 Tab mounted on 2nd large heatsink) labeled D207. This resister is so burnt, on my unit, the color bands are not readable, so the value can not be determined. Obviously, by size, this is a 1 watt resistor. This resistor goes out when C211 shorts out at high voltages. Normal testing will not show the short, since it is an arching short at high voltage. On my system C211 has no markings so I need this value also. From my knowledge of High Efficiency Switching Power Supplies, they use high frequency switching (pulse width modulation is used to vary signal width to increase amperage under load). Snubber networks are needed to chop off the hign voltage spikes that occur. These spikes vary as the input voltage varies. Typical voltage here in the US varies from 105 to 125 VAC. Therefore the spike voltages at the upper end can easily exceed 30 KVAC. Since I used to repair switching power supplies, the design engineers typically under rate the capacitor at 10-25 KVAC, which should be 35-50 KVAC. So when you replace this capacitor, get one with same capacitance rating (critical for resonance with the frequency of the design) but add 10-20 KVAC to the voltage rating from the schematic. I'm trying to find the value of these 2 components, so please share if you have this knowledge.

Since only these 2 components are bad on my board, will draw complete schematic for the board and post on my tech blog later and put up URL here. RCA Tech support would not give me the values, they have no schematics on hand and are only set up as "HOWTO" from operational stand point, so interaction with them is useless. Oh researching I found the factory spec values, C211 is 2200pf 1KV, but do not use exact replacement but use 2200pf 30KV, R202 is 10 ohm 1 Watt and I recommend using 10 ohm 2 Watt 2%. Look for the 2 Watt that has air holes for cooling through the substrate. Will be a smaller form factor about same diameter as standard 1 Watt.

I honestly was amazed at the stupidly low 1KV value the engineers gave to C211, since any experienced engineer know these voltages spike well above 12-20 KV. I recommended 30KV replacement, but if you are erroring on the side of caution, go even higher 35-50KV and your snubber network, will never go out again.

My currently working R202 measured today at 22.5 ohms. I learned this was a problem yesterday after doing general research about this new to me system. Again my resistor has not failed, though its rings are discolored, and the system works well. I did cut and solder short wires to allow me to mount the resistor elevated above everything to get better airflow and hopefully stay cooler and possibly last longer.

I haven't found the answere yet, but my RT2870 uses the same power supply board and this appears to be a known issue with this power supply board. keep checking this thread:

http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/rca/54253-rca-rt2870-turns-then-back-off.html#axzz2DvlVJuuL

if an answer is found, it will wind up being in that thread...

also, if you found the answer, please post it to that thread, thanks!

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

SOURCE: connecting RCA RT2770 to PC

Yes. Take the output from the sound card and connect it to one of the tape inputs. Note: you should use the "line out" jack for this.

Should I,change just the resistor that is burned?

Normally if a resistor has burned you will need to locate the cause or a replacement resistor will surely blow instantly in most cases? Is your model the HD52W59 RCA with the ITC222A chassis? If so let me know the resistor board location number such as RP256 etc.

Have an RCA RT2770 unit and it will not turn on either by remote or unit itself. have all components plugged in and still nothing. any suggestion?

Possible this is a shut down due to a protection cut off.
Need to check the outputs and the power supply to confirm,

I have an RCA RT2780 - receiver unit, and one of the resistors on the power supply board is burned so much that the color bands are not there anymore. The resistor is R202, if somebody has the circuit...

The resister called for is R202, which is a 1 Watt resistor and makes up a "snubber network" with C211, which must be replaced as it shorted, which caused R202 to burn out. This short will not show on any tester as the short only occurs above 25 KVAC from the spikes that this system typically produces. Do not replace C211 with same value capacitor, because it will also fail. The MFD rating must be the same to resonate with the frequency, but up the VAC rating. Engineers typically design these @ 12-25 KVAC and you need a rating of 35-50 KVAC, since the voltage spikes easily exceed 30 KVAC.

Looking for the resistor R15 data or part number to a DESA heater ignitor PC board 113471-01. Only indicator is DALE/R1F. I want to repair the pc board but cannot find the specfic part number to purcahse...

I also need this resistor! ignitor element shorted and took this resistor with it. If i cant find the size i will start with a high watt, high resistance resistor and work my way down until it lights i suppose. It appears that DALE R1F is a resistor series but the actual wattage and resistance are not given

The number you gave for the resistor is incorrect. But I did find a R14705. This resistor is a 1/2W 27K ohm resistor. This part is also in the deflection circuit. This is not a good circuit to play in, and resistor do not burn up by them selfs. There is a problem somewere neir by. The part number for this resistor is 238958.

From your description ..actually this is a common problem and no simpley replacing the resistor will not fix it. this chasis has a problem with what is called the high voltage splitter.. there was a number of these made with a defective splitter. RCA HAS ISSUED a service bulliteen for certain models and serial numbers. the board and the splitter is generally replaced. (I just worked on one of these 2 days ago and got and order in for the parts) ......just reread the tech bulliteen.. the spitter which develops a crack is rca part number 258512 the resistor or the part that burnt is resistor a common 27k 1/2 watt 10% carbon resistor

Resistor don't normally burn out with help, say, without a failing flyback transformer and possibly taking a transistor or two with it. If you need the manual, go to http://www.samswebsite.com/photofact/pf_search.asp and type in "F31317" into the search field, you will several listings.
