Question about Projection Televisions

1 Answer

Akai model pdp4206em. The tv is showing faint trails of color on turn on. Last few weeks seeing normal picture, then later some green dots here and there in the picture. Then the screen would come on fuzzy, with less force in brightness and was hazy. I changed power supply, that was not the problem. So now I am at a loss, unless maybe the buffers? No idea and can't afford to keep doing the parts swapping.

There are 2 boards that they call main in the service manual, the main
control board which actually drives the panal, and the "main video
board" which handels the video inputs and on screen displays.

In ur case it seems to me that ur "main video board"have some fault and needs to be replaced..So it is better u contact a technician...

    thanks...

Re: Toshiba 65 in Cinema Series - 12 years old. Color Separation. Green bow at top center of screen, red and blue double images tilting upwards toward sides. Sometimes clears unassisted after set has...

projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Regular picture size shrinks and color fades

This is a common problem on certain models of Philips Magnavox TV sets. The most common symptom is the screen will shrink and expand over and over. After the TV heats up for a while the video will work like normal. After a few weeks or months your TV will eventually stop working and not have video. RCA DLP TV with a red dot in the middle of the screen

Sounds like the color wheel stopped and re-started. It may continue to function for a while, but could fail at any time.

I've also seen on rare occasion, a defect in a lamp produce uneven color rendition, but its far more likely that the culprit is the color wheel.

Your green gun in our tv is misagligned/out of focus. Your tv uses red, green and blue guns that layer in different shades and mix to create the different colors. Your green is a little off so the colors aren't mixing right which explains the green haze and the shadows. A tv repair man can fix this problem pretty easily and it isnt expenisve.

Akai 46in rear projection

Projection TV makers charge an arm and a leg for their replacement lamps. They make it easy to do but as a result the custom lamp assy is expensive. The trick is to just buy the bulb for your model TV from any number of us aftermarket sources at a fraction of the lamp price and install it in the old lamp yourself. really easy.
Hope ya fix it!

Its the light engine. Had a tehnician come and look at mine and was told it would have cost over $600 if I didnt have the warranty. Panasonic called 2 weeks later and told me that parts are no longer available for my model and are upgrading me to a 50 inch tv.(from 44 inch)
