i took the power supply out and tested it. it was in good shape and nothing wrong with it. could it be that the on/off switch it self is out of comession?

Unfortunately, your Power Supply Unit (PSU) is probably dead. When the power comes back on,  it is often accompanied by a power surge. This can quite often destroy your power supply. To replace this, unless you have experience doing so, I would suggest taking it into a PC repair centre, as power supply are serious business, and installing one incorrectly, or installing an incorrect unit, can cause further damage to the computer.

It is possible that the switch is dead, although quite unlikely. It seems that, if the power supply is fine, it may be your motherboard or processor that was fried in the surge. PSUs are supposed to protect against this, but they don't always do so, especially with cheaper and OEM power supplies. If you are able, try taking out the processor and test it in another board. Do the same with the RAM, actually, it can cause all sorts of strange problems. If not, you may have a dead board. Interestingly, this exact problem happened on my home computer not two weeks ago (power outage and all), and it ended up being the board that was toast (Dell system, so crappy power supply).

It does sound like the power supply. Try flipping the power swich in the back, by the cord, then press the power button on the front again. But most likely, the power supply will need to be replace. If you do happen to get it come back on, take the cover off and verify the CPU fan is spinning, if it's not, that could be the problem as well.

it could be a faulty switch or the bad lead connections

test all power and data leads that attach to your hard drive IDE SATA

MOTHERBOARD TO THE HARD DRIVE make sure they have secure dust free connections and are not faulty if its a flat ribbon 40pin ide

this will be the first to fail

make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure dust free connections

a computer needs power and data to travel through every working device and continue its cycle and have a finishing point so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

make sure the CPU has a secure dust free seating with thermal paste

make sure your ram modules are securely seated with no dust in the sockets also the Cmos battery has charge with no dust in the socket

My hp pavillion a530 wont turn on i havent turned it on in a while but it worked fine about a year ago now it wont even turn on

There is a good chance that the power supply is faulty. This occurs because there are high voltages present in a power supply when in use. Electronic components have a tendency to be very reliable when in constant use, but when they are not used for some time and then suddenly receive current when turned on, they often blow due to the sudden flow of electrons.
Try obtaining a working power supply from another computer and test if your PC switches on. If this does not solve the problem then I would suspect a RAM problem.
Remove the RAM from the motherboard and clean the contact points using an electrical pc board cleaner. This is also a common cause of a PC not turning on.

Please don't hesitate to contact me again should these options not solve your problem.

Best wishes,

Look into trying a PCI video card. I doubt the monitor went bad, however, the onboard video controller for the PC may have.
