Question about PC Desktops

2 days ago I tried to open an attachment in an email message and received a message that said "Virus Scanner is Currently Not Available". I now cannot open any attachments in any emails. I don't know what caused this. I also have Norton Internet Security 2009 installed in my computer. Norton Symantec recommended I contact Yahoo for this problem.

    Are you using POP3 for Yahoo, or checking your email in your web browser from the Yahoo.com site? If you are checking your email via the web, the problem would most likely not be related to Norton.


    When you say you can't open any attchements - are they all they same file type? All JPG's, or ZIP files? Have to tried to open more than one kind of file? If not, the problem could be related to the file type itself.



    As far as the Norton goes and the error two days ago, have you verified that it it running? Are all of the services running? If youi spoke to Symantec, I assume that this has ready been resolved, and only your attachment problem remains?

I don't know how the problem was fixed, perhaps after performing 2 complete scans on my laptop. I can now open email attachments. Thank you anyway.

Email Will Receive but Will Not Send b> According to the Radicati Group, a technology market research company, over 107 trillion emails were sent in 2010 -- that's roughly 294 billion emails a day. Moreover, the company estimates that there will be 3.8 billion email accounts by 2014. With so much activity, some users are sure to run into trouble when trying to send a message. If you are receiving emails but can't send them, it may be due to a number of issues, most of which you can quickly fix on your own.
SMTP Authentication b> Many email clients and providers require that your outgoing email messages are authenticated by an SMTP server prior to being sent. This authentication process adds an additional level of security and helps prevent junk mail from being sent out. If you have SMTP authentication disabled, however, your email will not be authenticated and will not be sent, even though you may still receive emails. To fix this issue, enable SMTP authentication by placing a checkmark next to the option in your email client or provider's Settings menu. b> Port 25 Blocking Port 25 is the port that is used to send email. Whenever you attempt to send an email, the email is routed through port 25 and the data is transmitted to remote email servers. If this port is blocked, you will be able to receive email but you will not be able to send it. Some Internet service providers block this port on their servers, so if you suspect that you are unable to send email because of port 25 blocking, contact your ISP and request that the port be unblocked. No Default Email Account b> If you do not have a default email account set up on your email client, and you haven't selected a specific account when composing the message, the client will not be able to deliver your email. A sent email must always be tied to an email account to protect other email users. To remedy this issue, specify a default account in the email client's Account Settings menu, or specify which account you want to send the email from when composing the message. b> Anti-Virus/Anti-Spam Scanner b> If you have an anti-virus or anti-spam scanner installed on your computer or as a plugin for your email client, it may be preventing your emails from being sent. This happens when the scanner times out while scanning an email for viruses or spam content, or when it detects what it believes to be a virus or spam while scanning the message. To remedy this issue, disable the anti-spam or anti-virus program, then send the message as normal.

How to avoid viruses in Emails.


Dealing with the ever-growing onslaught of spam is bad enough, but our Inboxes are also under siege from another threat: viruses and Trojan horse programs disguised as legitimate message attachments, often from someone you know. When you open the attachment, the virus infects your computer, and then, behind the scenes, it uses Outlook to send virus laden messages to people in your Contacts folder.
You can avoid getting infected by one of these viruses by implementing a few commonsense procedures:
· Never open an attachment that comes from someone you don’t know.
· Even if you know the sender, if the attachment isn’t something you expect to receive, assume the sender’s system is infected. Write back and confirm that the sender sent the message.

Some viruses come packaged as scripts that are hidden within messages that use the HTML format. This means that the virus can run as soon as you view the message! If a message looks suspicious, don’t open it, just delete it. (Note that you need to turn off Outlook Reading pane before deleting the message. Otherwise, when you highlight the message, it displays in the Reading pane and sets off the virus. Select View>> Reading Pane>> Off.)
Install a top-of-the-line antivirus program, particularly one that checks incoming email. Also be sure to keep your antivirus program’s virus list up-to-date.
In addition to these general procedures, Outlook also comes with its own set of virus-protection features. For example, Outlook automatically disables certain types of attachments, such as executable files. However, if you want to ratchet up the security level in Outlook, you need to switch to a diet of plain text. That is, you need to tell Outlook to ignore HTML and Rich Text formatting and, instead, display all your messages using text with no special fonts, colors, HTML tags, images, backgrounds, or sounds: just simple, unadorned text where no virus or other malicious content can hide. Here are the steps to follow:


1. Choose Tools, Trust Center to open the Trust Center dialog box.
2. Click E-mail Security.
3. Click to activate the Read All Standard Mail in Plain Text check box.
4. Click OK.

When you receive an HTML or rich text message, Outlook converts the message to plain text when you view it either in the Reading pane or in its own window. The Information pane also includes the following message:

“This message was converted to plain text.”

How to keep your computer virus free


Many people that I have helped with computer viruses had recently purchased new computers which have virus protection included in the software bundle. The problem with these virus protection programs is that the updates are only good for the first year. After that, you must pay a fee to continue to get virus updates.

Many consumers don't realize this and after the year is up, do not renew the membership with the anti-virus company, leaving their computer unprotected from incoming viruses.

So, if you purchased a computer over a year ago, be aware of this problem. You will need to pay the yearly fee to maintain your anti-virus updates or get another anti-virus software available on the market.

There are some anti virus programs that are free or low cost. I have found AVG to provide a good quality free anti-virus program for home users. You can access the download at http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free.

Also, remember to be aware of emails from senders that you are not familiar with. Also be very careful about opening attachments on any emails. Be sure you know who sent them to you. Even then, if your not sure, verify with the sender that they actually sent this attachment to you before opening it. Email attachments are one of the most common ways of spreading viruses.

I have received an email with attachments I placed it on the desktop and then double click my computer creen become black with no icon then become blue, the programs menue become empty, desktop commands...


The email you received had virus and that has affected your computer performance. Please have the virus removed by a professional as this virus seems to be hazardous. In future please do not open any mail unless you are sure of its origin.

When I try to send and recieve e-mails it says an error hs occured


Please check your anti-virus. Some anti-virus see e-mails with attachements as virus. If that doesnt work try sending the e-mail using another browser.

Cant delete email in Outbox of Outlook express


Hi,

Stranger things have been known to happen to folks using Outlook Express, but I'm sure that's little comfort to you now. Here are some things you can try to remove the offending item from your inbox.
  • First, have you made sure that you are current with Windows Update patches and fixes? There are a bunch of nasty bugs in Outlook Express that can leave you open to attacks from specially formatted emails -- with or without attachments. Some viruses can be activated and spread to others just by viewing a message in the preview pane, but ONLY if you are using an old, unpatched version of Outlook.

  • Next, is your anti-virus protection up to date? If your service has expired, renew it ASAP. Or check with your ISP to see if they offer any free anti-virus software.

  • Try turning off the preview pane in Outlook (use View / Layout and UNcheck Show Preview Pane). Then right-click the offending message and select Delete.

  • Some users report success with pressing the Shift and Delete keys after highlighting the message. Note: This technique will delete the message without sending it to the Deleted Items folder.

  • Finally, it's possible that the undelete-able email does not contain any harmful content, but attempting to open it triggers a flaw in your anti-virus scanner. If you are certain that the email is a harmless message from a known person (and they are using anti-virus software), you could try suspending your anti-virus program, then attempt to delete the message.

    When trying to open yahoo my computer will just sit and think.


    Try using Mozilla Firefox. If still not open, it's due to your wire used. The sensitivity of the wire is important. Also check the server you are using.

    I don't know how to remove attachments


    You cannot delete just the attachment from emails recieved, however you dont have to open them, also you can change this setting in outlook express goto tools->options->click security tab->remove the check next to "do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus". also if you right click on the paperclip next to the message on the left side and go to delete it will remove the email.
