Question about Roper RAS8244KQ Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Washing machine not agitating

My Roper heavy duty washer model# RAS8245EQ is 8 yrs. old and I've never had a problem with it until yesterday when I heard a loud grinding/clicking noise. It fills and empties fine but will not agitate. Is this something that can be fixed easily or would I be wasting my time and money? I would have to have a service person do it as I'm physically not able to do it myself. Hope someone has an answer. Thanks, scalla

I have a Roper RAS8245EQ1 heavy duty washer and never had a problem with it til now. It fills up and drains properly but will not agitate or spin.It makes a grinding/clicking noise when turned on. You can turn the agitator full circle by hand and it tries to agitate but can only move an inch at a time.Is there a belt i can replace or are we dealing with plastic gears that are shot? You can email me with any advice.

If the washer does not agitate at all, does not spin, but will still drain, this is a symptom of a broken motor coupling.

The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

This is a very simple repair that doesn't cost much. The repair is actually much easier than you think and requires no special tools. The part number is included in the link I provided. Appliancepartspros.com carries a replacement motor coupling for about $11.

NOTE: A broken motor coupling is usually accompanied by a loud rattling noise. You can hear the motor engaging and running, but there is no tub action.

If you need an illustration, you can refer to the website I mentioned and locate item 13 under the Brake/Clutch/Gearcase/Motor/Pump section.
The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and the gearcase (transmission). It takes the place of a drive belt and commonly fails on Whirlpool manufactured top loaders due to normal wear and tear. This configuration is known as a "direct-drive" system. The replacement motor couplings are more resilient and resist breaking better, because the manufacturer added a steel grommet.

If you have any questions about this repair, or if you need additional assistance, please let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

PS $11 for a do-it-youself repair, with instructions? I think this would definitely be worth your time and effort.

AGIT DOGS ,,, go get or order whirlpool part number 80040
replace those and you should be good to go.. they are under the cap and have lil grippers on them that wear down and help rotate the agaitator assy..

Kenmore 80 series only 3 yrs old, won't, spin and the agitator appears to be stripped

your agitator dogs are stripped there about $10.00,remove cap to replace. easy, need 1/2 to 3/8 adapter or 7/16 socket depending on model. and your coupler is broken about $20.00 its what runs yous washer its like your belt under neath between motor and transmission , less cloths max water will stop it from happening again
