Question about Dayton Gas Furnace Heater

1 Answer

Won't go past 68...

I have a dayton gas furnace that when you set the heater temp past 69 it will heat it's self up to 68 and then just start blowing air. It won't pause or anything it just keeps blowing. It's freaking cold outside and I'm tired of getting up and resetting it every 3 min. Especially at night we wake up in the middle of the night and the in house temp is around 59, desired temp is set at 69-70 and it's just blowing air.

Be sure the filter is new and clean
Check Chimney/vent to be sure it is not plugged or iced up.
Also if it has a drain be sure it is not kinked or plugged and draining correctly

If it is the limit switch that appears to solve proble sounds like you are overheating exchanger (not moving enough air over heat exchanger. with goo thermometer check with heat on discharge air temp and retuen air temp difference in temp should be in range of number stamped on unit name plate for acceptable diff . If diiff you read is over nameplate rating must correct air flow and also check for restricted flue exhaust too.

Will the fan run with the fan switch in the ON position? as opposed to the AUTO position. If so the temperature or time delay or motor may be bad.
the fan switch operates the fan relay that controls high/cooling speed, heat speed is a time or temp delay.

Dayton gas furnace model 3e385 works and lights but as soon as fan comes on the unit shuts off and lights again wondering what was wrong

Check heat exchanger for cracks or holes which will cause the fan to blow out the flames. The flame sensor on the pilot or burners has to be in constant contact with flame to operate normally. If the flame is put out by a cracked exchanger the exchanger or furnace needs to be replaced.

Please have this checked out by a technician. If there is a crack in the heat exchanger it could do just as you described. The blower blows air into the combustion chamber and blows out the burners.

Fan continues to run after heating

That's the fan switch. It's a thermostat that controls the fan coming on and off, it's probably failed and needs to be replaced. You can see it if you take the front off the furnace, the wires come off it and go to the fan motor.
