Question about Televison & Video

Open Question

Inverter problem!? Hello, I recently read a posting from you regarding a Westinghouse LCD W32701. I have an Haier TV which has the same symptoms :-( However, when I get the blue screen it's clear that all the transformers are working or at least appear to be! I'm therefore ruling out a dry joint or the transformers as they measure about 900 ohm on the primary side. One thing I have noticed is the 24v line with or without the inverter connected is 25.3v but I can't see any bulging capacitors. If you can help it would be much appreciated :-) Thanks, Ian - UK

SOURCE: PSU or inverter problem?

I would recomend replacing the 11 caps on the inverter as 90% of the time its failed capacitors on the inverter. If you shine a bright light into the screen can you see the pic? Thats usually one of the first things I do when I suspect bad caps on the inverter.

I turned the tv on and the screen is black. I turned it off for a while and turned it back on and the picture will show for a second and then go to black again.

It can be failing 24vdc power supply or failed backlight inverter board, those are the two areas you need to check.
If you are going to DIY and have proper tools, electronics knowledge, and know safety precaution then please read on:

I got a WESTINGHOUSE that powers on and has a great picture but goes black in about ten minutes still has sound!! i can hit the source button a few times then picture comes back on then same thing all over...

There are two places to look for the problems, the backlight inverter board and the power supply. Look at the power supply first since it is easier to get to, look for burnt parts, bad capacitors, etc.

The "Picture in Picture" function will only work with a "digital" source like hdmi or dvi input. It will not work with an s-video or vga input source.

This sounds like bad inverter board.
Every time LCD goes from Standby to ON state - Inverter Board resets it’s self for approx. ~1 sec, during which time you should see blue screen.
Problem is that board detects problem with voltage/current on one of the seven transformers and shuts down automatically...
As to the costs:
- BestBuy repair service approx.. $600.00
- Buy new Inverter Board & repair LCD your self approx. $200.00
- Another option is to repair Inverter Board, but parts are sometimes hard to get...
Now for the DON"T TRY THIS AT HOME or AT YOUR OWN RISK solution:
-The cheapest method is to bypass protection circuit, by transferring good signal from working transformer (using 10nF/250V capacitor) to detection circuit at the faulty transformer.
Then watch movies on your LCD unlit BAD transformer totally BURNS-OUT.
This will be obvious by dark stripe about 1"-2" tall across your display.
Hopefully the only damage will be to the transformer and not CCFL (light behind your LCD), but when you are faced with a choice of using it for a while longer or throwing your LCD to garbage right now... to me this choice was simple.
Good LUCK.

No picture on Westinghouse W32701 LCD Model

Screen goes black, sound unaffected. Can be remedied by turning off and immediately back on, but it will do it again and again and again.
