Question about Epson Stylus Photo R1800 InkJet Printer

1 Answer

Paper won't load. Media loaded incorrectly.

Paper will not load from top sheet feeder. I've reinstalled new printer driver and changed USB port. Printer acts like it's feeding paper, rollers move, "paper grabber" active, but paper won't feed.

Exactly the same thing - every time I try to print it makes all the right noises and then ....nothing, paper won't load and error message that paper not loaded. Doesn't matter whether it's wireless or direct via firewire, or which type of paper it is.

  • blakero Jan 03, 2009

Same problem here too. no matter what paper type or how much paper is loaded it takes me standing by the printer applying slight pressure on top of the paper for it to load, which only occurs after the forth or fifth piece of paper has gone through without printing. Any help would be great!!

  • johnrichardf Jan 04, 2009

the same, paper feeds thro no print error messages says paper jammed??

or media not correctly loaded no matter what it will not print

  • kimolson Jan 06, 2009

I found the solution. Disconnect the printer from the computer. Hold the "On" button for a minute. The printer will go through a self-diagnostic and reset. Reconnect the printer and paper will feed.

  • bheller Jan 11, 2009

I tried the holding down the on/off button but nothing happened. The paper sometimes feeds and then jams on the inside of the printer, buckles up and the print head then catches it and squashes a paper wad that I have to pull out piece by piece.

I've come to the conclusion that Epson makes crappy products at very high prices. Their flatbed scanners jam, their printers jam, my R1800 just keeps passing paper through telling me media is "loaded incorrectly", I spend more time trying to get the damn things to work than just outsourcing my work would. I'll be buying Canon next time. Epson really is garbage.

Okay.. 1st off I'm probably going to the jumped on for this... But.. I fix and/or make them work printers, computers and all sorts of electronic gear. For a living... Yes .. the manufacturer will tell you not to use alcohol to clean the rollers. but it does work. Windex (ammonia) will clean the heads at times. I also use Scotch brite pads to clean the pickup rollers. We get them in about 8x10 inch pads.
I will spay some alcohol on the end where the pick up roller is. Place the pad in normal paper tray. Most printers have a cam shaped one on the right, left or in the middle. That gets the paper moving. The pad is way to thick to actually move and will cause a jam indication on the printer. But what happens is the roller will slip on the pad and clean itself. Pretend you cleared the jam a couple of times and the printer will try to pick up the 'paper' and jam again. A couple of these and the pick up roller (cam shaped) will usually be good to go. The other option (the best) is to buy a new pickup roller for the printer. But cleaning will work for the short term. What happens on most printers is the roller gets very smooth from normal use and then won't pick up the paper for the rest of the trip through the printer. I have used a piece of fine grade sand paper, but you have to hold it so it won't go through the printer and it makes a gritty mess... Once I orderd a 'printer cleaner' from HP and all it was, was a couple of pieces of scotch brite glued to a fancy holder to match the spacing of the rollers. That's when I started using sheets of the stuff. Just pretend they are a piece of printer paper. In the worst case I have used belt dressing and then alcohol to clean most of it off. Alcohol has a tendency to soften the rubber on the pickup roller. That's why the company says don't use it. But you can by rubber rejuvenator that is mainly alcohol.. Go figure.........

Paper won't feed

Inside of the machine is dirty.
If the inside of the machine is dirty, the printed paper may be smudged.
Follow the steps described below to clean the inside of the machine.
1. Ensure that the machine is turned on and there is no paper loaded in the Auto Sheet Feeder.
2. Place A4/Letter-sized plain paper in landscape orientation, horizontally fold it in half.
3. Unfold the paper, and load the paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder with the inverted-V edge down.

4. Select <Bottom plate cleaning> from <Maintenance>.
5. Select <Yes> on the Bottom plate cleaning confirmation screen and then press [OK].
Paper will be ejected.
If protrusions inside the machine are stained, wipe ink off the protrusions using a swab or such like.
* Important
Before cleaning, be sure to turn OFF the machine.
Paper feed roller is dirty.
Follow the steps described below to clean the paper feed rollers.
1. Ensure that the machine is turned ON and there is no paper loaded in the machine.
2. Select <Roller cleaning> from <Maintenance>.
3. Select <Yes> on the Roller cleaning confirmation screen and then press [OK].
The paper feed roller will rotate as it cleans.
4. Repeat this operation twice.
5. Load three or more sheets of A4/Letter-sized plain paper lengthways in the Auto Sheet Feeder.
6. Select <Roller cleaning> from <Maintenance>.
7. Select <Yes> on the Roller cleaning confirmation screen and then press [OK].
The paper that is loaded in the machine will feed through the machine and be ejected.
8. Repeat Steps 5 to 7 three times.
Inappropriate paper type is used.
Check to see if the paper you are printing on is too thick. See Paper Types You Cannot Use.
Note that smudging may occur at the top and bottom edges of the paper when using Borderless Printing. Ensure that the paper you are using is compatible with Borderless Printing.
Thick paper is used.
When printing on thick paper, set the Paper Thickness Lever to the right.
This widens the gap between the FINE Cartridge and the paper. Try this maneuver if the printed surface is scratched.
Media is curled.
If all four corners or the printing surface of the paper is curled, the paper may become dirty or may not feed properly. Use the paper after correcting paper curl as follows.
1. Place the printing surface face up (A), and cover it with a sheet of non-printing regular paper to avoid damaging the surface.
2. Roll up the paper in the direction opposite to the paper curl as per the figure below.
3. Check the printing paper to confirm if the paper curl is eliminated to within approximately 2 to 5mm / 0.08 to 0.2 in (B).
It is recommended to print on curl-corrected paper one sheet at a time.
The media type is not selected correctly in the printer driver.
On the [Main] tab of the printer driver, ensure that the [Media Type] selected matches the paper loaded.

In the [Print] dialog box of the printer driver, select [Quality & Media] from the pop-up menu, and then ensure that the [Media Type] selected matches the paper loaded.
Paper is loaded incorrectly.
Load in the portrait orientation regardless of the print direction of the Auto Sheet Feeder.
Ensure that paper is loaded correctly. Slide the paper guides against the paper stack.

SCX 4521F multi/f keeps reporting "Document Jam"

Hello there,
If the paper is lodged too far into the printer and can't be removed: Press the power button to turn the printer off.
Pull firmly on the paper to remove it. If you can't reach the paper because it is too far in, raise the front cover and remove the paper from the front of the printer.
Close the front cover.
Press the power button to turn the printer back on.
Resend your document to print.

Ensure that:
The paper is a recommended paper for Laser printers.
You do not force the paper down into the printer when you load it. For example, if you are loading letter or A4 size paper, the top edge of the paper should extend above the top of the sheet feeder.
The printer is on a flat, level surface.
The left paper guide is against the side of the paper.
You do not load too much paper in the sheet feeder. Depending on the thickness of your paper, the sheet feeder can hold up to 100 sheets of paper.
The left paper guide does not cause the paper to bend in the sheet feeder.
Your printer feeds regular paper as expected. If regular paper feeds without causing problems, load the envelopes vertically against the right side of the sheet feeder. Make sure the paper guide is against the side of the envelopes.
Envelopes or the appropriate specialty papers are selected in the printer driver.
You are using a paper or envelope size supported by your printer.

Canon Pixma mp510

The top-loading sheet feeder accommodates approximately 150 sheets (depending on weight), and the front feeder is good for around 100 sheets. Actual media sizes supported by the main feeder (top-loading) include A4, B5, A5, Letter, Legal, Envelopes (DL size or Commercial 10), 10x15cm(4" x 6"), 10x18cm, 13x18cm, 20x25cm, and Credit Card (54x86mm), while the front feeder is less accommodating with just A4, Letter, and B5.
