Hard drive problems with Optiplex GX260

I have an Optiplex GX260 that I took out a bad Maxtor hard dirve and replaced it with a Western Digital hard drive and it goes to a black screen with choices of F1 or F2. When I go into the BIOS I find that the computer shows "uknown device" for the hard drive.

You should be able to manually enter the drive perameters into bios. That should let you boot. Or boot it up with a boot disk.

sorry kinda got messed up. First is it SETA or IDE? If seta the drive is bad or the controller is bad, With IDE you are lookin at the same kinda problems but if IDE you used to be able to imput the size, heads, allocation etc... Not sure if you can still do that but most likely if you are replacing a drive you think went out i would guess it is the controller on the motherboard.

Make sure that the drive is connected in the primary IDE connector. Also put the jumper at the back of your drive to "master".

Having the same proble with Dell optiplex GX260 very very very slow it takes a day to load Xp SP2 and I added up to 1GB still the PC is very slow. The machine fresh loaded no application loaded only XP...

I would take a look at the motherboard, mainly the capacitors and see if any of them are bulging or have stuff coming out of them, if they do the motherboard is pretty much bad. If the motherboard looks good, try disconnecting the cd/dvd rom drive, and remove any add in cards that are in the pc. If there is still an issue, could be a bad cable for the hard drive, or the motherboard or processor could be going bad.

These things are notorious for having the CPU heatsink grease dry up (and the processor speed steps down) but I'd also scan the hard disk for bad sectors.
If the fan has started sounding like a jet engine, it's more likely that it needs new heatsink grease on the CPU.

First test your PSU or replace it then test all leads that are attached to your hard drive sounds like a faulty lead of some sorts then
try replacing all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA and the ones that attach from your motherboard to hard drive or
replace them they are probably old and faulty ?
good luck

My computer cannot find new hard drive disk . my hdd is western 80 ide

Make sure that the IDE channel you are using is turned on in the BIOS. In the optipled line, you press either delete or F2 to enter the bios when the computer is first powered on. If you're adding a HDD, the bios must be set to look for the hard drive. If you're replacing the hard drive, let the BIOS recognize the drive - save the changes and then reboot.

How to forat the hard drive

Good day sir, hi, lets review first some of the reasons why windows xp cannot be installed on your PC, here are the possibilities :
  1. Your Windows XP CD is scratched beyoned readable. You will get prompts for missing files or files that can't be read on the CD. Get a good copy of windows XP.
  2. A memory module (ram) or some are defective, you get the blue screen with all sorts of warnings and data you can't understand and numbers you don't know. Check your ram modules. To be sure have it tested on another PC. If bad, replace it.
  3. Your memory should be aleast 128 mb or more for windows XP to install properly.
  4. Your CD/DVD drive is bad or selective of the CDs it reads, you may need to check the drive.
  5. your hard drive is bad, or has to much bad sectors near the boot area, where windows install its system and boot files, you have no choice but to replace it with a new one, or else you cannot format the old one no matter how.
Thats it, if I miss something, let me know, send me error messages to diagnose it properly.

My gx260 cannot boot up, there is alarm 3 & 4 light display near power push button.

I have a GX260 and a GX270. It sounds like maybe your hard drive may not be plugged on all the way. If you cannot access even the boot section of your computer, this could be the problem. Alternately, it is possible your hard drive may be inaccessible do to damage or failure. Can you give me more information? Thanks.

Computer does not see hard drive or cd rom

Use separate cable for both the hard drive.
Make master to the one which is bootable, restart your system and just check bios setting whether both the hard disk are detected or not..also under boot device check first boot drive is hard drive which is master and bootable..
