I recently got an Acer Aspire One that came with Windows XP Home. I formatted the hard drive to install XP Professional. Now it doesn't recognize my usb drive and I am unable to reinstall the drivers (to include the usb driver).

Installing the external CD Player...
You will go and start up and install Windows XP by doing he following:
Plug in your external CD drive, and let windows install it into the system...
Once the CD is ready to go, shut down the computer.
You will first need to format your hard drive, I will give you instructions on how to do that.
1...To format your hard drive and install XP:
To set you computer back to factory fresh settings you will need to format the hard drive and install the XP operating system and the drivers.
1.Format the hard drive: You do this by double left clicking on "My Computer",then double left click the main drive (normally C drive). When the window pops open, you will choose "Format" Keep in mind that once you format your hard drive you will loose all your files, programs, pictures, etc that you installed since the computer was new. So make your back up on a portable hard drive, thumb drive, etc.
2. Once the formatting of the hard drive is complete you will need to install the XP operating system along with the drivers. You will now insert the CD's into your external CD player starting with #1 first and continuing until all has been installed.
After all has been installed, shut your computer off and restart.
That will bring your computer back to Windows XP factory new condition as far as operating is concerned. Please take time to rate me
If you are formatting this model Acer usinf the Windows XP installation CD then Windows cannot detect the hard disk because this Acer uses a SATA hard disk and Windows XP cannot detect a SATA hard disk. The Windows XP installation CD does not include a SATA driver in this CD. Reinstalling Windows XP on an Acer Aspire 3000 is fairly straightforward. You may need to reinstall Windows XP due to hardware failure, a virus infection, major hardware changes or a hard drive upgrade. Whatever the reason, you can do the reinstall yourself at home. The reinstall will take anywhere from 1 1/2 to 3 hours, depending on the size of your hard drive. Be aware that reinstalling Windows XP will format your hard drive, getting rid of all data on, so you'll want to back it all up on a media device.
Back up all data on your computer before reinstalling.
Insert the Windows XP disk and restart your computer.
Press any key when prompted to begin running the disk.
Press F8 to agree to the terms of service.
Choose the partition you want to reinstall Windows XP on. This is usually "C:" for most users.
Choose the type of format. You can choose either "Quick" or "Full" for NTFS systems. A quick format only takes a few minutes less than the full format.
Wait for the format to complete. The Windows XP installation wizard will begin. You will be asked to choose your time zone, computer name, and to input any network information. Otherwise, the reinstall will run by itself.

Problem : When Windows XP was made there was no concept of SATA drives now ur drive is SATA and ur installation disc does not contain drivers for ur Hard disk thats why it is unable to find ur hard disk as it doesnt recognize it u need sata raid drivers on ur windows inst cd
this specific model Aspire 4710 was shipped with vista OS and drivers now u are downgrading it to XP it depends on the installation disc if it is new one like SP3 included then u would have never faced this issue in ur case u should get a RAID driver from www.intel.com and then include them in ur copy of windows XP cd to load them at the startup of installation , so u need them in the first place to carry out installation, u have to do some job here download RAID DRIVERS from www.intel.com select ur board and chipset Mobile Intel® 945GM Express download SATA RAID DRIVERS and then download nlite a software used to integrate these drivers to ur inst disk , u can also include SP3 thru this software in ur current win xp cd
just download sata drivers from intel and nlite from the link and install the software integrate these drivers and burn ur cd incl them and then install normally as u were installing them earlier now it will recognize ur drive simple for more info how to do check this out
