Are there any visible scratches on the black discs? If so i would recommend getting them resurfaced at your local game store. If there is no damage to the disk then it is more likely than not down to the PS2 laser, as they get older they struggle to read more and more until they will only read perfect white disks or nothing at all. Give the laser a good clean with some solvent, being careful not to scratch it.
Sounds like you need to clean the lens on your PS2. The best solution is to find a DVD player lens cleaner from a local electronics store (make sure it is a good quality one, don't buy the cheapest one) and put it into your PS2 disc tray. It will play the disc using the DVD player on the PS2. Make sure you follow the directions for the lens cleaner very carefully, as you don't want to accidentally scratch your lens.
That should help with the reading issues. Good luck!
Xbox DVD-Drive's often scratch circles into your discs and some even got malfunctioning lasers that will burn rings into games. To prevent the circular scratched from happening avoid moving your console at any time while it is running however it often also occurs just in regular use especially for older consoles with Hitachi or Samsung drives. As far as I know Microsoft replaces discs that were clearly damaged by a console free of charge, at least here in Europe they do. Try calling Xbox Customer Support and ask for a replacement it is worth a try for sure even if they shouldnt replace it they will at least give you a 1-month subscription for Xbox LIVE in exchange.
hello try cleaning disc and lense..if disc has scratches .ones that go straight across disc are not to bad but if they follow disc in a circle ,lens will follow scratch as it is reading.when cleaning disc use a cleaner as any thing else will scratch..also try another game to see if your lens is okay .they can fail for no reason.
Confirm the disc is inserted
correctly into the PlayStation 2 console (label side should be facing
up when the PlayStation 2 console is in the horizontal position).
the disc is clean. To clean a disc, use lint-free cleaning cloths made
specifically for cleaning CD/DVD discs, sold at computer software
stores. When cleaning the disc, we recommend starting from the
innermost circle, and wiping out to the edge in a straight line. We do
not recommend wiping in a circular motion, as it may create more
scratches on the disc. [Note: Other materials, such as a paper towel
or a T-shirt, may also scratch the disc. If there are any scratches,
smudges, or fingerprints on the disc, it may not function properly.]
Try playing different CDs, DVDs, and games on the PlayStation 2 console to see if the problem exists across multiple discs.
To determine if the problem is with the disc itself, try playing the disc on a different PlayStation 2 console (or a PS oneTM or a standalone CD/DVD player, if applicable).
