Word 2003 opening .doc error - File Conversion

A week prior I did install the Windows Utility that makes future versions readable in prior versions.

Bugger hey? Can I take this window away and get back all my text/data in the word file. I have tired all the different codes but no luck. Any ideas??

I tired opening it with Word 2007 and I still get the error message. I have the file on me to attach, please request.

I have tried openiing it in Rich Text, Recover Text, in Safe Mode.

  • Jaymie Knight Dec 23, 2008

If I uninstall Word 2002 and reinstall it will it convert my files back to normal, ie. without the File Conversion window?

    Thanks, Jay

  • Jaymie Knight Dec 23, 2008

Hey, after a long winded troubleshooting experience I have found that it must be my Office 2003, and that is must be an error in the istallation. I will need to reinstall it.

When I copy the .doc file over to a USB and open it on another computer I get the error. It is not the key itself (virus) so I have found it to be my version of Office 2002. I have even tried OpenOffice.org but no luck.

When I reinstall my version later tonight (I will make a backup) how can I put back recent changes to my .doc Word files?

Hi,

Wow. What a problem. Its probably lost if none of the good guys have given you answers that should recover a damaged file.

Since you clearly then do not have a damaged file and state it is encrypted some how by default. Would your right click your My Documents folder and select Properties. Does it offer to make your folder private or is it already locked? You can verify if its locked by creating another Administrator account logging in to that account and then try to access your My Docs folder in your actual personal accounts folders. It if states its locked and private then that is where you want to concentrate.

Go into your My Documents and right click the My Documents folder and select make public or share, either one. Windows will ask you if this should apply to all sub folders too. Choose yes and that may unencrypt your file.

If that is not a fix for your problem, enter Word. Go to the options for Word and look under the area where you would set a password to protect files. See if one is set to encrypt/decrypt files and then disable the feature. This may or may not restore your file.

I don't know if this is going to work or not, it may. But, still, have you called Microsoft or visited their website for programmers? Go to the Microsoft Home page and do a search for Tech Net MS Word, create a user account if need be and post your problem to the user forum.

Best Regards,
Worldvet

I'm downloading your file so give me a day or two to try my repair tools before you dismiss my solution so we can still talk some more if needed.

I have MS Live and one of their web sites and access to those white board tools we get. By my attempting to upload it into a MS Online Whiteboard, usuallly used for collaboration, MS Live may repair the damaged file.

I'm one of the working Experts where I own and run my own shop so I'm normally pretty busy. I do this FixYa stuff at night after dinner. So if you could bear with me I'd appreciate that.

Allow me to ask you a couple of questions about this file.

1.) Did you embed files as links? Using Insert File?
2.) Did you embed a PDF file? If so, what version was that?
3.) It looks like you have a few jpegs in this file, did you download these images or create them yourself as they alone can blow out a document if there is embedded copy protection in the jpegs.

As I stated before, there are some tmp files associated with your file, these would be autosave copies. Do a search against your hard drive then for these files and then first try to open in Word, if that fails rename the tmp file to name.doc and then open again.

    WRL3857.TMP
    WRL0508.TMP
    WRL3618.TMP
    WRD0005.TMP
    WRD0141.TMP
    WRD3470.TMP

By the way, on casual review of this file, it looks like a bunch of embedded links to documents and a few photos. Is that right?

If there is no uninstall option in add/remove programs then I suggest you backup you documents and reinstall 2003. You can also try open office to open up your 2003 documents. Its free to download and use so you don't have anything to loose. You can also read the new .docx format with open office.

First all see if you can open up the .doc in notepad or wordpad. If so double copy the document. Keep the original and rename the 2nd. (always better to have a back up) If you can open that way uninstall the windows program that you installed. Then do a system restore to a date before the install.

Compatibility Pack for the Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats is downloadable at microsoft.com
This download applies to the following Office applications:

  • Microsoft Office Word 2003
When Word starts misbehaving the prudent thing to do is to simply replace Normal.dot.
(Normal.dot is the default template for Word.)

You might want to make a backup copy of Normal.dot so you could restore it if necessary.
(If this is true there should already be a backup copy)

Delete Normal.dot

Close Word

Use the Find/Search Files or Folders feature of Windows Start, Find or Start, Search

All Files and Folders

Type in Normal.dot

Search Drive C:

Select Search or Find

You should see either Normal.dot or Normal in the search results depending on how you configured the Folders.

Delete it and if you see ~ormal.dot, ~$ Normal.dot.doc or ~normal.dot delete those also to your Recycle Bin.

When you start Word again it will create a new normal.dot that is the default Document1.doc.

need to download and install both the Office 2003 Converter Pack, and the Office 2007 converter pack

I would like you to try this:
When Word starts misbehaving the prudent thing to do is to simply replace Normal.dot.

(Normal.dot is the default template for Word.)

If you have significantly modified or configured the Toolbars as I have
you might want to make a backup copy of Normal.dot so you could restore
    it if necessary.

This converter pack does not enable the conversion of the new Word
2007, Excel 2007, and PowerPoint 2007 file formats. To convert the new
file formats you must download the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack
for 2007 Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint File Formats.

It is also possible to open and edit a .docx file in OpenOffice or
StarOffice using the free Open XML Translator from SourceForge which
converts .docx Word documents to .odf and vice versa.

    My last solution is
Using the recover text from file tip

  • Microsoft Word 2002 with Service Pack 3, Microsoft Excel 2002 with
Service Pack 3, and Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 with Service Pack 3

  • Microsoft Office Word 2003 with at least Service Pack 1, Microsoft
Office Excel 2003 with at least Service Pack 1, and Microsoft Office
PowerPoint 2003 with at least Service Pack 1

  • Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003

Go to microsoft and download the update that changes files from .doc to.docx, etc. This will make them compatible with open office and vice versa.

I see this has been a long running question, and just my pennies worth....The header in your original post suggest that the document is coded in language code 0400. This is the code for german, so your files may be coded in german language code 0400, not encrypted as u think.
Solution - not sure right now....not even sure if I am on the right track so i am just making an observation.

    Hi,

The files are non recoverable ..because of the severity of corruption. The only option you can do is try a system restore , when the files were working fine on the computer . If that makes it to work.

Also the files were not written using microsoft word 2000 or later but word 95 or 98.

    Thanks

Just a SWAG here but I think you might need to download and install both the Office 2003 Converter Pack, and the Office 2007 converter pack as well. You can download these from Microsoft's web site for free
Please Note:
"This download provides file converters and image filters for Microsoft Office programs, from Office 97 to Office 2003. These additional converters and filters are for older or seldom used documents or image formats.
The Office File Converter Pack supersedes all previously released versions of the Office Converter Pack.
Note: This converter pack does not enable the conversion of the new Word 2007, Excel 2007, and PowerPoint 2007 file formats. To convert the new file formats you must download the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for 2007 Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint File Formats.
Additional converters for Corel WordPerfect are available optionally in Microsoft Office Word 2003. To access these converters you must customize your installation of Office 2003. to include these optional file converters available under the Add or Remove Programs option in Control Panel."

When Word starts misbehaving the prudent thing to do is to simply replace Normal.dot.
(Normal.dot is the default template for Word.)

If you have significantly modified or configured the Toolbars as I have you might want to make a backup copy of Normal.dot so you could restore it if necessary.

Good luck.

Word Add-ins (unlike “normal” templates, which you see when you select File => New) enable people to add global functionality to Word. Other software vendors mean something similar when they refer to “plug-ins”, but Add-ins can be very basic, to the extent that ordinary Word users can create them.

There are two types of Word Add-ins:

Global Templates, stored in Word's Startup Folder(s). This is the only type of add-in supported by Word 97.

Global templates are the type of add-in that non-programmers can create, although they can also be very sophisticated indeed; and they appear in the listing of Tools => Templates and Add-ins in Word. The path where each add-in stored is shown at the bottom of the dialog when you click on the add-in's name.

To find out where your Startup path is, select Tools + Options + File Locations, and note the path listed under “Startup”. If you cannot see the full path, double-click on it.

Word 2000 and higher complicate things pointlessly and annoyingly; any .DOT files stored in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup (or equivalent, if you installed Word somewhere else) will be loaded as an Add-in, regardless of what your setting is under Tools + Options + File Locations + Startup. However, you can fix this by deleting any such files or, if you do want them loaded, by moving them into your “real” Startup folder.

Add-ins stored in the Startup folder are loaded automatically when Word starts ; but you can also store add-ins elsewhere and load them “on demand” at any time by clicking the “Add” button on the Templates and Add-ins dialog. For more on this, see: Organizing your macros.

As well as VBA code (macros), global templates can also store Autotext entries, and keyboard and toolbar customizations. Global templates are a safer place to store such things than Normal.dot, because they are less prone to corruption and virus infection..

COM Addins, which are DLL or ActiveX EXE files (only programmers can create these). These are not stored in Word's Startup Folder. The command that displays Word's COM Add-ins doesn't appear on a menu by default, but you can add it to the Tools menu (and thus find out whether you have any installed, and if you do, where they are stored) as follows:

    1.

Open Word and go to the Tools => Customize menu and choose the Commands Tab.

    2.

In the left pane choose the “Tools” category.

    3.

In the right pane choose the “COM Add-Ins” command, click on it and while holding down the left mouse button drag it to your Tools menu, just below the “Templates and Add-ins” location.

Do I have a choice or a notification when some other program installs an Add-In?

Not always. Some software programs install Add-ins to enable them to integrate more effectively with Word . Some ask you if you want to go ahead, others just assume you do.
Why did Word slow down after the Add-In was installed?
    Some Add-ins are inefficient.

Others are large and complex and take time to load. If the benefits of an Add-in aren't worth the added delay, you can remove a COM Add-in by choosing Tools => COM Add-ins, selecting the Add-in and clicking Remove. To remove a global template for the current Word session, you can select Tools => Templates and Add-ins and deselect the relevant checkbox; or to permanently remove it, you can move the Add-in file out of the Startup directory when Word is closed. (or if you're absolutely sure, you could delete the file).

How To: Recover a Microsoft Word document

Successful Microsoft Word recovery depends, like all data recovery
tasks, on how the document was lost in the first place.

How to recover a damaged Word document
If the Word document exists, but is damaged – for example, it does not display
correctly, or in its entirety, or it causes Microsoft Word to behave
incorrectly – then you can try to recover as much of the document as you
can. There are a number of things you can try to repair a Word document.

If the document can be opened in Microsoft Word

    • Save the document to another file format, such as Rich Text (.rtf)
or Plain Text (.txt) and then convert it back to Word.

    • Copy everything except the last paragraph mark, or all the
undamaged portions of the document, to a new document.

    • Force Microsoft Word to try to recover the document. In the File, Open
dialog box, after selecting the document, click the arrow by the Open
button and select Open and Repair.

    • Use the Recover Text from Any File converter. In the File, Open
dialog box, select "Recover Text from Any File (*.*)". (This
converter is only available in Microsoft Word 2002 and later, and may need
      to be installed.)

If Microsoft Word cannot open the document

    • Close Microsoft Word, then click Start, Run, type winword
      /a
and press Enter. Try to open the document using this copy of Word.

    • Insert the damaged document into a new document. Create a new document,
then click on Insert, File, select the damaged document and
      click Insert.

    • Open the file using WordPad, then re-save it to a new file, or copy the
contents and paste them into a new Word document.

    • Use the Recover Text from Any File converter. In the File, Open
dialog box, select "Recover Text from Any File (*.*)". (This
converter is only available in Microsoft Word 2002 and later, and may need
      to be installed.)

If the recovered Word document is still damaged

    • Try using the specialist Microsoft Word document recovery tool DOC
      Regenerator
. This product is often able to repair corrupt Word documents using text
found in previously saved copies of the file.

    Lost data?
You wouldn't have if you had been using AJC Active Backup.

How to recover a deleted Word document

    • The first step for deleted Word document recovery is to look in the Recycle Bin!

    • If the document is not in the Recycle Bin, and you are sure it must have
been deleted recently, then use an undelete or unerase
      data recovery tool like Uneraser
to recover the deleted Word document.

I would say open it up and see if some one has changed the way it is to load up. I would say to load the papers to a cd and go some where else and see if it loads up with there program, if not then take it to a Kinko's and they will tell you what happened. let them know you need one copy of the paper and if you have another program they can make it some thing else if you have like windows 95 or 98 just saying.
good luck

Hi, If Word wants to convert your document then there is something in thedocument that is triggering it. When Word opens a document it first determines what type of file you are opening based on the internal content.
For example if it determines the content is a rich text then it opens it using the rich text convertor. Note that the type of document has nothing to do with the file extension as far as Word is concerned.

Anyway, I think what you are saying is you are no longer prompted for the conversion and it is converting automatically? If that's the case then go to
Tools/Options/General and make sure "Confirm Conversions at Open" is turned on.

Are you trying to read a 2007 file?

You might want to redownload and reinstall the upgrades to read 2007. They are long files to download and reinstall but it should be done just in case.

Thanks for the clarification. Sometimes the versions get mixed up in these. I'm with you on reinstalling Office 2003 unless there is a virus with the doc file. It should be scanned for viruses as well.

was this file encrypted as I have gotten an ecrypted message?

  • machadojr_fe Jan 15, 2009

look for the temporary file of the original file,
usually the file hidden and stored on the same folder as the original.
Enable ‘view all files’ in the “tools” -> “Folder Options” ->
“View”. Enable View hidden files and locate the hidden Microsoft Office
file looking through your temp directory.

This temporary file will have a few different letters after the
tilde (or squiggly line “ ~”) . These are good ones to look for to find
    some lost info:

    • A word document file will look like ~wrdxxxx.tmp

    • A temp document file will look like ~wrfxxxx.tmp

Hi mate.
This is the Solution!
Even if you don't have Microsoft Office Word installed, you can use Word Viewer to open, view, or print documents that were created by using Microsoft Office Word 2007, 2003, 2002, or 2000. However, you cannot edit, save, or create a new Word document unless you have Word installed.
As you already have Word 2007 and you want to make changes to a document that was created in a different version of Word, download this free viewer from Microsoft here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3657CE88-7CFA-457A-9AEC-F4F827F20CAC&DisplayLang=en

This will work and is free.

Season's Greetings to you!

Make a safe copy of the file on a different folder first, so that you do not damage it furtherly.

Try first this recovery from word 2003/2007 : Recover the text from a damaged document

There is also a wide choice of software to recovery Word damaged files, with them you will have at least the text inside, the format may be lost.

They are shareware, and usually you cannot save, see if there is one that works for free and save the document, or test if there is one that works fine, and buy the full version.

Hi there, the mumble jumble is normal, if file is stil recoverable, below the mumble jumble you find file contents, but all format and parts of the document will be lost.

Try opening the file on a different computer, using windows 2007. If it does open, then do Save As , and save in office 2000 version, or in rtf.

Here is Office 2007 trial download, this version works only for a limited time, after that you will have to install back your new office, or get a licenced copy of MS Office.:

Try Microsoft Office 2007 - Download Microsoft Office Software

I tried the file, does not seem recoverable, give me some day, I willl try additional recovery software.

Hi there
The problem is that you saved your previos documents in 2003 as opposed to 2007 here lies the problem, 2003 version WILL open the documents, you can try to right click on the document, select properties and click the "unblock" tab, if this doesn't work for you open it in RTA format and save it in 2007 version

Word 2003 can not open ask for convertor how can i resolve?file conversion error

You may receive the following error:

Word cannot start the converter mswrd632.wpc
This error is cause because of f the security update for Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 on December 8, 2009.
You may experience mail merge issues write files are parsed but no message is shown.
To resolve this issue, an affected user can unregister the mswrd632 converter by editing the registry as follows:
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text Converters\Import\MSWord6.wpc
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
Click Yes.
Exit Registry Editor.

NOTE: For x64 systems above path is slightly changed:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Applets\Wordpad
This change will effectively unregister the converter and disable it for third-party applications and for Microsoft Office. Microsoft Office will use its own text converters to open these kinds of files.
You can also fix this issue with applying the registry fix, but that is a less secure way according to Microsoft, as this fix actually creates 'AllowConversion' key in the new 'Wordpad' subfolder. (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Wordpad)
Download REG fix
There is another way to solve this issue by copying the MSWrd632.wpc file from another computer that doesn't have this issue. Make sure that this file comes from a trusted source on your network. This file can be found on the following path:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\TextConv

OR

Go to Tools > Options > General (Tab) in Word 2003
And check "Confirm Conversion at Open"
When you next try to open the document it will prompt you with a list to convert from. Choose Word 2007 and your document will open.
Have in mind that you will have to unregister mswrd632 first, which is noted above, before you make this changes.
NOTE: If none of this works, please check that your file is not corrupted, or that you or someone else didn't add X at the end of .doc extension or vise versa. This WILL NOT work! You have to convert the document using Office 2007 or 2010.

It should be an option when you click save.
I have no knowledge of this product, but you could open in word and save as a doc file.
If you have word 2003 or earlier, you can download a free file to enable word 2003 to open docx files.

Document received but unable to be opened / read

If you have MS Word 2007, by default, the file extension is .docx and it can't be open by previous versions of MS Word unless conversion packs are installed. To make your scanned documents accessible to others, save it using .doc extension. You can do so by following these steps:
  1. Click on file (round button) then Save As
  2. Save your document with compatibility with Microsoft Office '97 to 2003.
  3. The file extension will be .doc and you should be good to go.
