Differential hard right or left turn causes a clunk or snap

  • Anonymous Aug 31, 2012

2002 awd merc. mountaineer, hard right or left turn causes a clunk or snap in the front end. My mechanic thinks it's the differentia, want to put a used one in. He removed the front drive shaft and the clunking went away. I had a Jeep AWD and the rear wheels would lock up on hard turns. After spending time and money on the rear end found out it was the viscous couplings in the transfer case- top notch transmission shop replaced couplings--not cheap! & problem went away. I am in fear that this problem will once again be like being eaten by a shark one limb or leg at a time and cost lots of $$'s. Have been looking on the internet for solutions and find them all over the place from tire circumfrences to differentials to transfer case to drive shaft etc. etc. You'd think for the number of years the awd mountaineer has been made, some ace mechanic would know the coorect cure asa the internet is full of people describing the exact same described problems.

Do your homework here, otherwise u will just be replacing parts. tire pressure, circumfrance and same brands are critical. as well make sure the ball joints etc are in good condition. by taking out the driveshaft your mechanic has only eliminated the driveshaft u-joints as a possible cause. you have front u-joints, front ball joints, sway bar links, springs, radius arm bushings that may be causing the noise. the pop is caused by something worn that is being put in a bind while turning. sorry i am no help here but your mechanic needs to go further then taking out a driveshaft and confirming the axle is bad... a bit more to it than that. wish u luck.

What is causing a Clunk or thud noise

A "click" or "thump" noise can be caused by several factors, including: suspension: Loose or worn suspension components, such as control arm bushings, control arm connections, and struts, can cause rattling noises when climbing over bumps. Drivetrain: Worn or damaged drive shafts, constant velocity joints, or differential components can also cause rattling noise. break: Worn or loose brake parts such as calipers and rotors can cause a rattling noise when applying and releasing the brakes. engine: If the engine rattles, there may be a problem with the engine mounts or the timing belt. These are just some of the possible causes of knocking noise and an accurate diagnosis can only be made by a specialist after an inspection.

I have a 1994 k1500 6.5l turbo diesel and every time I put it into 4hi my truck goes about two feet then I hear a loud clunk and the truck feels as though it is going over a speedbump in the front because...

Wow. A snapped side shaft sounds serious. If you lift the front end of the truck, (or the rear end for that matter) the wheels will appear to be counter rotating, it is the way a differential works. If you turn the left wheel forward, the right wheel will turn backwards, and vice versa.
When you change to 4wd the front end does make a rather loud clunking sound as the gears engage. You should therefore change while the truck is stationary, then slowly move forward or back until the 4wd engages, then take off.
If your truck went OK on ice, it should go as well on pavement, just don't try to engage 4x4 while moving.

My 96 range rover 4.0 SE makes a clunking noise when i take off only after it build speed it is totally quiet ...i was told to change the differential and did ...still hear the clunking and hesitation when...

Likely to be either a propshaft Universal Joint, or possibly a Constant Velocity Joint in the front axle.

Is it more of a noise when starting off (and moving slowly) when turning hard to the right or left? Whichever direction is worse, that side is the first place to check (the Constant Velocity CV joint in the swivel housing)

If both directions sound the same , check the propshaft joints.

Clunk under auto center front when turning left or right

have your CV joints checked. If the CV joint boots crack, the joint will lose all the grease and accumilate dirt. This will cause a metal grind/ping when making turns. If ignored, it may cause the joint to break causing the vehicle to be stationary and unable to move. Hopefully this help!!

Clunking sound at rear axle and not spinning correctly

Hey guys, that clunk that you are hearing is not the differential. all z71s or 4x4 have this problem. its the yoke that enters the transmission on the rear just sand it down with 220 grid sand paper on the outside and inside, the splines tend to get surface rust alot. after you do that put some hi temp grease inside the yoke install it and there you go. the noise stops
