Question about GE DBVH512EFWW Dryer

GE Dryer DVL 223GB1WW

My dryer runs and heats, but there is a thumping sound when the drum turns. I took the top cover off and the belt looks okay at first glance. (1) What else should I look for on the belt to establish if it is bad? (2) What else could be wrong with the dryer? Could it be a clogged exhaust making the thumping sound? (3) Also, could you direct me to a service manual to repair this myself? The dryer manual is not comprehensive and only provides very general information. (4) Does this seem like a serious problem? Guide me how to open, check and replace the belt?

To access these dryers you open the door and look up at the 12 oclock position and their will either be 2 or 4 screws holding down the top. These must be removed and then you can get the top to come up(or off on newer models). Once you have the top up you can get to the screws which hold the front on (2). Then you simply remove the front and get it out of your way. On these dryers there is a friendly rear hatch to help you replace the idler. As far as the thump tha could be from anything. Once you get the dryer apart you should be able to locate and remedy the problem.

I have a GE gas dryer and it runs but has recently started making a thumping noise. I can spin the drum by hand and it doesn't make the sound. What's wrong with my dryer?

ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE STARTING ANY REPAIRS
Your problem sounds like drum rollers have flat spots on them or in need of lubrication.

Note: This method works with most front loading machines.

Remove the electrical console that holds the timer switch, start switch, etc. from the top of the dryer.
Note: Some tops hinge and tilt backwards so they do not have to be removed and the electrical console with stay with the lid.
Also remove the lint filter and the screws holding the lint filter housing in place.
Be REAL CAREFUL not to knock any of the wires off of the timer switch. Then remove the top of the dryer.
Remove the front of the dryer. This will expose the drum and belt. Remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers, idler arm pulley and motor. Now is a good time to replace the front felt seal on the drum if it needs to be replaced. Be sure to use a good grade of weatherproof cement on the seal to glue it to the drum, sometimes the glue is furnished with the seal.
Now is also a good time to check the belt to see if it has slipped off of the idler arm pulley and also to check the belt condition for wear.
Be sure to note the route of the belt, this will come in handy when you go to reinstall the belt.
Check your drum rollers for flat spots or wear, if they have flat spots they will make a thumping type of noise or if there is too much wear on them replace them.
If the drum rollers don't have flat spots or wear on them then they probably only need lubrication. Lubricate the shaft of the rollers with a good grade of machine oil such as 3inOne oil. Reassemble the dryer, plug back in. This should solve your noise problem.

How do i take apart the my dryer

Sounds like a drum roller bearing. When they go bad they form a flat spot and that against the drum will give a loud thump. Turn the drum by hand and you should feel the flat spot. You may have to remove the back panel to get a good look see and a repair access. Good luck.

Dryer making a thumping noise, heating okay, drum is going round. could drum be out of round and thumping on the rollers

the roller is out of round instead for the internal bearing has dried up and locked tight making the belt to burn the nylon roller flat in the spot the belt rides on. It will be neccessary to replace the belt and the roller as well

It will turn on but the tumbler wont move or heat up

ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO ANY WORK ON IT.
Sounds like your problem may be a broken belt, if the belt is broken or slipped off of the motor or idler arm pulley then the dryer will not turn or heat up.
If you have to replace your drum belt and if you have a front loading machine.
Remove the electrical box that holds the timer switch, start switch, etc. from the top of the dryer. Be real careful not to knock any of the wires off of the timer switch. Then remove the top of the dryer.
Remove the front of the machine, this will expose the belt and drum, remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers, idler arm bracket with pulley, and motor with pulley. Pay attention to the route of the belt, this will come in handy when you go to reinstall the belt and drum.
Sometimes the belt will slip off of the idler arm or motor causing the drum not to turn.
While you have the drum out, I would recommend that you lubricate the drum rollers at the shaft of the roller with a good grade of machine oil like 3 in One oil. This will save you a problem later with the rollers getting noisy, also check your drum rollers for flat spots, if they have flat spots on them this will cause a noise like a thumping type noise. You will need to replace the drum rollers if they have flat spots on them.
I will include these two websites for parts and further help:

Good luck,
I hope this helps

Dryer makes a loud thumping noise when running

A thumping sound in your dryer could be caused by a flat spot on one of the drum support rollers. It can also be caused by a problem with the drum. An idler pulley on for the belt on the drive motor can also make a thumping noise when the dryer is running. Check to see if the cabinet is properly leveled with 4 feet firmly on the floor. Push down on opposing corners to check for play. Adjust the leveling legs if necessary.
Without a model number of your Whirlpool dryer, I am not able to provide much more help. If your dryer has the lint filter that pushes down into the top panel of the dryer, then here are a few tips for accessing the inside of the cabinet:
  • Unplug the dryer to disconnect electrical power.
  • Pull the lint screen out.
  • Remove the screws that secure the top panel to the lint screen housing.
  • Use a putty knife to release the clips on the front of the top panel (about 4" in from each side) that secure it to the dryer frame.
  • Hinge the top panel up and back.
This will provide to access to the inside of the dryer cabinet. Manually spin the drum in a counterclockwise direction and see if you can determine the source of the noise. If you need more help, resubmit your question with additional details and the full model number of your Whirlpool dryer.

Dryer drum making thumping noise

My dryer just started making this noise. So I opened the back up to try to figure out what it might be, and when I opened it I saw something. It was part of the belt that drives the dryer. There are grooves vulcanized to the belt, and a small section of grooves or cogs I think is what they are called had come apart from the belt and what laying there on the floor of the dryer. But I ran it and timed the thumps in my head to get it to stop right on the "thump". Sure enough there was a small 1/2'' appx. of belt Cog missing, so the "thump" came from when the belt came around to the motor and the pulley hit a divit in the belt, "thump". So needless to say I need to replace the belt soon before it breaks completely. I figure that it looks like someone may benefit from knowing what the noise is. Now its off to find the proper belt and look up how to change those things...Good luck to those reading this.

Motor not strong enough

The problem dosen't sound like the motor. Check to see if the drive belt is loose and slipping. This is the usual cause of the problem you describe. If not, the bearings for the drum may be going bad. The heating elements should turn off shortly if the drum stops so there is little danger of overheating.

ALWAYS UNPLUG ANY APPLIANCE AND TURN OFF THE GAS VAVE BEHIND THE DRIER BEFORE ATTEMTING TO MOVE IT. I HAVE REPAIRED GAS FIRED EQUIPMENT FOR YEARS ...ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU LOCATE YOUR GAS METER IN THE HOUSE OR OUTSIDE AND HAVE A ADJUSTABLE WRENCH READY. I HAD A GAS VALVE BREAK-OFF IN MY HAND AND, A FLEX-LINE BREAK WHEN I MOVED A DRIER ... I WAS LUCKY I KNEW WHERE THE METER WAS. YOU CANT BE TOO SAFE !!! THE ONLY WAY TO CHECK A BELT IS TO REMOVE IT ... THERE IS A SEPERATE ADJUSTABLE PULLEY THAT ADJUST THE BELT TENSION (USUALLY LOCATED AT THE BOTTOM OF DRIER BELOW THE DRUM NEAR THE DRIVE MOTOR) YOU MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE TO LOOSEN THIS ADJUSTABLE PULLEY TO REMOVE THE BELT. FIND A CLEAR AREA WHERE THE BELT IS NOT ON THE SRUM AND PRESS ON THE BELT ... THERE SHOULD BE NO MORE THAN 1/2" OF "PLAY" ( MOVEMENT)IN THE BELT AFTER YOU REMOVE THE BELT ... TURN IT IN-SIDE OUT. AND SLOWLY ROTATE IT ... INSPECTING EVERY INCH FOR CRACKS AND EVSERSIVE SIDE WEAR. IF THERE ARE ANY CRACKS, VISABLE PLYS (LAYERS) OF THE BELT CAN BE SEEN, OR IT IS REAL SHINNY ON THE SIDES... THE BELT SHOULD BE REPLACED. WHILE THE BELT IS OFF ... USE YUR HAND AND SPIN THE DRUM TO CHECK FOR ANY WOBBLE.... THERE SHOULD BE NO WOBLING ... IF THERE IS IT MAY INDICATE BAD BEARINGS... HOPE THIS HELPED
