I have a Porter- Cable 10,000 watt generater with a 20 hp honda v twin engine. It has less than 40 hours on it. First I want to know what grade of fuel I should be using. I had it running with 91 octane, and it ran fine for 15 minutes. Then when I went to turn the power on the welder, it wouldn't kick back on. It still idles, but won't go to the higher load rpm. When I shut it off and restarted it, it started with a very loud backfire. I have run it previously with regular gas and haven't had a problem. I was wondering if this could be a gas problem, or should I look elsewhere?
You have a simple problem and it has nothing to do with the octane, honda's love better gas, thats all I use in all my equipment and even my 4000 psi pressure washer runs better and cooler with higher more efficient octane, Your problem is in the carb, clean and service it, make sure the air breather is clean (soap and water only if it is a foam unit and do not spray it with any oil) then check for water in the gas by draining the tank into a large clear glass container 1/2 gal at a time. and after all this is done and needs to be done anyway, change the spark plug run the unit and make sure the throttle up solenoid is adjusted properly or even working if this unit is equipped with one. good luck
WHEN THIS SET IS IN THE WELDER MODE, IT WILL IDLE UNTIL YOU STRIKE AN ARC. THEN THE ENGINE REVS UP TO GOVERNED SPEED. AFTER YOU STOP WELDING, IT WILL THEN GO BACK TO IDLE. MOST HAVE AN IDLE CONTROL SWITCH TO DISABLE THIS FEATURE. HOPE THIS HELPS.
