The cooling oil has over heated and turned yellow or brown in the blue tube. It takes about 330 ml per tube to replace it. I found it easiest to completely remove the tube for this job.

DO SAMSUNG HC-P4741W TVS HAVE A TROUBLE CODE LIGHT?

if color is skewed or looks 3d its a convergence problem--select that in main menu and try to adjust--if will not adjust it needs the chips for that replaced.

Please rate this solution after reading.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Samsung HC-P4741W has no picture and no sound

Doubt it is the convergence board. It is in shutdown mode caused by an overcurrent or overvoltage condition. It will take some troubleshooting to pinpoint the part(s) that are defective. Could also be a cracked solder joint.

RED CONVERGENCE SCREEN PATTERN BOWING AND CAN'T ADJUST

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Bad color scheme - cannot adjust enough

If you haven't already done so, it may be that all you need to do is adjust the convergence after moving the set. You should find convergence and its adjustments in the setup menu

Greenish haze on my Samsung HC P4741W

If you purchased it new then this clearly should not happen - if it is second hand and therefore older then the red tube could be burnt out. The convergance may simply require allignment if the set has been knocked about trying to get it to its final resting place - this would need a tech on site to set it up.

Samsung hc-p4741w flashing red light

That sound is made by the power supply who's gooing in protection mode due to some overcurent in secondary. Could be many reasons: conv. amp. IC's, video amp.IC's etc. In my opinion more then 70% chances to be the STK for convergence. Need to be troubleshooted by a tech.

Rear Projection TV Picture is all green with Horizontal Lines

It looks like you started out with an intermittent solder connection which may have been fairly easy to find early on. Now, unless a technican can make it come and go while tapping on the circuit board and repair the connection, it may be a very expensive shop repair.
