Hi There!
This sounds like a typical problem related to a older CRT.
If you remove the front cover of the tv, you can then remove a wood panel. Behind this panel you will see a block (high voltage splitter) it will have 6 "knobs" on it, 3 will say focus, 3 will say screen.
They will also be labeled R - G - B
Put the tv on a blank input so you can see the lines clearly on a black screen  - Find the knob for red, and SLIGHTLY turn it down until the red lines disappear.

Try pressing the Flash focus button on the TV to adjust the convergence and check if it helps.

Faint red lines in a curved arch like pattern

For this problem, what you have to do is here I found this solution: Right below your speakers on the right and left side are tabs. Pull out the tabs and remove the screw on eachside. Once that is done remove the speaker cover and you will see a fiber board cover in the middle of the tv, there will most likley be twist ties holding some wires, to make it easier to work remove the ties. Now remove the screws on the fiber board and pull it off. You should see 3 adjustments on the top for focus, do not touch those. Below the focus adjustments on the bottom is the blue, red, and green adjustments (they should be labeled). All you have to do is turn adjustment screw slightly to the left(or counter clockwise) and it should clear right up. That should do the trick, Hope this is helpful. Please dont forget your rating.

Instructions for replacing the bulbs

The "bulbs" for a KP-51WS500 are 3 picture tubes--they are no longer available from Sony. The only way to get one is remove it and send it out for REBUILD--very expensive and usually not worth doing..

All these sets had bad tubes--a lot of them had the wrong tubes installed when they were sold---I know as I replaced dozens of them when these sets were still under Sony warranty--

Tell me what problem you have and I will try to help you---the most common problem is the screen will go bright blue, red , green and or set will shut off.

Sometimes you will get a blue cast (blue tube seems to be the one that goes most) to the picture with faint curved trace lines.

If you have this kind of trouble there is something you can do to try to correct it---it requires no replacement of parts--only some adjustments

If this information has helped you rate this solution as I do this here for free.

Sony KP-51WS500 projection tv. Screen is green with curved lines

The green picture tube has an internal short. Happened a lot with that model. The tubes are no longer availible. But a reputable company called Video Display will rebuild the tube completely. But the tube must be pulled and shipped to them. Most repair shops would charge around $400 to $500 for the complete job.

Red horizontal curvy lines

You need to turn the voltage on the red tube down slightly, also you would need to adjust focus to compensate for the lower voltage to the red tube. On the left and right bottom side of speaker cover are two round covers, take them out and there are 2 1/4" hex screws take them out carefully take cover off, there is another service cover same hex screws remove. You will see the focus block on the right side, tubes are labled on block. 2 knobs for each tube. Make voltage adjustments while tv is on a black screen, then for focus, turn color all the way off in the menu, and adjust focus until it looks right in black and white. These adjustments should only be very small; if alot of adjustment is needed, you may have other issues.

Screen turns red after 10 minutes

First, lets see exactly what is happening and what is causing it. If your picture starts out fine, and after 10 minutes or so you notice that the picture is getting redder, and the redness slowly gets worse and worse, until finally there is red everywhere with faint curved lines, then chances are your Red Screen control is set just a hair too high. This is a very simply thing to correct. If, on the other hand, the picture is fine for 10 minutes or so and then suddenly flashes very bright red, followed by the set shutting down, then your red picture tube has developed a short in it, usually between the heater and cathode. A good tech might be able to remove the short by arcing. What is your set doing? The KP-51WS500 is one of the newer 16x9 1080i HD sets and the tubes are available from any Sony distributor. When they told you the tubes are not available, that was their way of saying they do not want to bother helping you. The Sony tubes are quite inexpensive, costing about $175, and they come complete with sealed coolant chambers, so replacing a tube is quick and simple.
