Question about Traxxas T Maxx 3.3 Monster Truck

I had bought a traxxasT maxx used today and was told it was a 3.3 and think its a 2.5 with a 3.3 engine how do i tell the differance or is the rest of the truck all the same.and seems to run very lean on idle and stalls or bogs when you go to take off it is a new engine 2 tanks burnt out of it

You have to break the engine in on 5 tanks or fuel the only way to be sure it a 3.3 is measure the piston diameter open the low speed needle just a little like an eighth of a turn the one on the barrel of the carb

Sounds like needs resetting up.This would be the first thing to do. With the controls in neutral the carberetta should be open about 1mm. You can look down the opening without engine running to confirm this. Adjust throttle linkages so you have 1mm opening and then you can fine tune with trims.

Trouble startin , does not go full throttle and keeps stoppin.

First make sure you have about 1mm gap on carb opening and fine tune with trims. The high end needle can now be turned in about 1/4 of a turn and start. Keep trying to start while turning high end needle in a fraction in at a time, say after about 5 to 8 pulls of starter. Once engine is started come back out with screw a fraction to see if runs ok if not go back in.

How do i know if my tmaxx is the 2.5 or the 3.3 or something else i bought it used with no manuals

The motor should be marked on the right side of the block just above the motor mount. The header or exhaust pipe might make it had to see, but it should say TRX 2.5 or 3.3. The 3.3 T Maxxs also have blue rubber boots on the axles over the joint where the axle meets the spindle. The 2.5 T Maxxs just have an uncovered u joint.

My t maxx 2.5 is driving and steering by itself. when the engine isnt running everything works fine, but as soon as i start it it drives and steers and i have no control. ive taken it to many places...

Sounds like an antenna problem. Make sure the antenna is isolated from any metal of the chassis or engine. Also make sure the antenna is not damaged anywhere. You could try purchasing crystals on a different frequency, but I think that it is more likely a mechanical issue.

Does the sportmaxx take the same a-arms, bumpers frame rails, etc... as the t-maxx what is the differenc in the two.

Virtually all of the parts are the same. Pretty much the only difference is the Sportmaxx is 2 wheel drive and the T Maxx is 4 wheel drive. The Sportmaxx can even be converted to 4 wheel drive.

Sounds like an internal gear problem with the transmission. I would remove the transmission and open it up, anything that is broken will be easy to spot. All of the parts are available at a local hobby shop or from Traxxas directly.

Steering/shifting works but motors don't run (EVX2)

It is possible, you might want to try soldering a capacitor on the HPI motor like the stock motor has it.

Could be a bad glow plug. I would start there, they are inexpensive and easy to change.

Truck uses too much fuel

I believe the "fuel mixture screw" nabmommy is refering to is the High Speed Needle (HSN) on the carburetor. This is the largest adjustment screw on the top left side of the carburetor where the fuel line attatches to the carb. Tighten (clockwise [to the right]) to lean the fuel mixture in very very small increments, about 1/16th of a turn each time. Only lean the mixture out until you don't notice any improvement in power, then richen it back 1/16th turn to put it into the safe range.

If you lean the mixture out too much, to the point where there is no more blue smoke or it stalls when the rpm's are higher, you can overheat and destroy the engine very quickly. In this case richen the HSN (counter-clockwise [left]) 1/4 turn, make sure you can see a trail of blue smoke then try to lean it out a little at a time until you don't notice any improvements in power, then richen again 1/16th of a turn to make sure it runs safely.

You can check out your owner's manual for more detailed tuning methods and how to get the best fuel savings and the least damage.

P.S.- I also hope you did your full break-in procedure EXACTLY how Traxxas suggests during the first 5 tanks of fuel. I have two 3.3 motors for my T-maxx, the first one is junk (good for some parts) because I didn't follow the Traxxas way. It ran just fine, so I thought, until a friend of mine with the same truck drove mine a few times and told me that I was missing out on a lot more power. I bought a new engine and followed their plan and I was entirely SHOCKED at the difference with the new motor. Oh, and yes, I did have both of them tuned for perfect race fuel mixtures, running on Top Fuel 33% the whole time. The first engine I "broke-in" I used the method I've always used for nitro trucks. I was wrong.
